Question about 'Get rid of Shortcut Residue'

I have a computer running Win98SE on which shortcut arrows reappeared on desktop icons after having been turned off by Tweak. I could not remove these with Tweak by itself, and I could not remove them by removing all registry references to IsShortcut. However, after removing the registry IsShortcut references, I ran Tweak again and was able to remove the shortcut arrows. Perhaps you should include a comment about this on the Get rid of shortcut residue article.

Ray, this is probably the most discussed topic here in recent times. I assume that when you say Tweak, you mean TweakUI.

A recent Windows Critical Update negated the hack that TweakUI performs. You can be assured that removing the registry entries was what fixed your annoyance, not re-running TweakUI. (let's face it, it's not a problem, it's merely an annoyance to some, and a pretty trivial one at that)

Possibly there was a reboot somewhere in the sequence of events that you didn't take into account.

That entire article needs to be updated because of this, but I'll be surprised if that happens - they're probably too busy with XP annoyances.

I solved the problem with FreshUI from http://www.freshdevices.com. After installing go to Windows Interface/Desktop/Shortcuts/Shortcut arrow and edit from there. I agree, it is trivial but some of us are just control freaks.
