Question about 'Can't access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection'

I have a question (or ten) about Can't
access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection:

PROBLEM(S): - General Overview - Having performed the ICS setup directions as laid out in http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_98 1. I am having problems implementing this particular solution (of changing MTU values) to get a client computer running Windows ME to reach Internet sites via a Windows 98 SE LAN w/ Internet Connection Sharing over a PPPoE connection. The LAN seems to work fine (I am currently sharing files between both computers) and my host computer has Internet connectivity so I am ruling out problems with the ISP/Internet connection and with the LAN. However, when attempting to connect to websites on the client computer, I get the "Page cannot be displayed" message. So I tried pinging one machine on the LAN from the other, and vice versa, and both machines' pings to the other results in Request timed out errors when inputting MTU values of lower than around 1400 (1500 to around 1400 results in the fragmentation errors as documented). I can't seem to get a successful ping from either computer to the other no matter how low an MTU value I input. 2. I have also attempted to implement the solution suggested on the Microsoft site http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q273587 but I am unable to do this either. Specifically, my problem seems to be that I cannot alter my Dial-Up Settings to "Always dial my default connection" as specified in the above link, even though the Microsoft page seems to take for granted that I can. I am reluctant to mess around with any of my other settings (in some vain attempt to get Microsoft's solution to work properly) since my host computer's Internet access still works (for now) and my LAN still works fine. If anyone has any suggestions, or if they can see some horrible newbie flaw in what I've been doing, I would appreciate it. My LAN setup is as follows: - Internet Connection - Bell Sympatico High-Speed Edition using EnterNet / PPPoE (which uses an Efficient Networks SpeedStream ADSL/Broadband modem connected to the host machine's 3Com card) - Host - Intel Pentium III 933mhz running Windows 98 Second Edition 3Com EtherLink 10/100 PCI using Network TeleSystems P.P.P.o.E. Adapter (NTSP3) AOpen 10/100mbps Fast EtherNet PCI Adapter - Client - Sony VAIO PCG-FX301 AMD Duron 800mhz running Windows Millenium Edition Realtek 8139-series PCI NIC (which is connected to the host machine's AOpen card via A-Link Mini Sized 5-Port 10/100M N-Way Switch) - Cable - RJ45 Male/Male Category 5e Patch Cables (between client and hub, hub and host, ADSL modem and host) - Software - all network cards installed properly (that I can tell) Internet Connection Sharing running on host - Firewall - ZoneAlarm software running on the host machine Norton SystemWorks running on the client machine If there is any other information that is required regarding my setup in order to troubleshoot my problem, or if you need clarification on exactly what my problem is, please let me know. Thanks in advance. - a newless cluebie NB. I only know enough to make me dangerous, so please be kind. ;)

I have SBC DSL with a USB modem. My XP computer acting as the gateway can reach all web sites. But all of the other computers on my network that share the Internet connection Sharring can not reach many pages. Most pages that can't be reached seem to be banks. I have no idea why they can't reach these pages.

in addition to this article : http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107 you may also need to edit the branches with 000x (with x being a 1, 2, 3, etc...) under the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans I actually (which I am not sure if this causes registry problems or not) edited and if where necessary added the MaxMTU string val to each MaxMTU key under the 000x branches. From what I have read, MTU values that work are 1500, 1450, 1452, and 1492. I have actually read a bunch of different responses from people using different values. I used 1200 and it worked, go figure! If you open a command prompt, and type the following command: ping -f -l 1500 192.168.0.1 you can test what MTU val you will need to enter. To test this, use the above command, replacing the 1500 with different MTU vals, and replacing the 192.168.0.1 with your default gateway (chances are you are using ics, if so, your ip is 192.168.0.1). The desired response from this ping is a positive reply. If you get a "destination host unreachable response" or a response that says the request needs to be fragmented, then that is not the MTU val for you. Once you found the val, make the changes to the registry, restart, ping that val again. If you get a fragmented response, you should be in business Good luck! (email me if you need me.)

I fixed the problem buy buying a DSL Bridge and chucking my DSL modem. I also bought static IP Addresses. It is so much better than having to deal with all that driver stuff.

I would love to have the solution to this problem.. Verizon denys its anything to do with them and appart from the new ADSL connection, we changed no other settings.

Try with this: In each client: - Run regedit - Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces - Search for the key that has the IP address of this client (only one has the IP address). - Add a new DWORD value, set name MTU and value 5AA (hex) - Restart That's all..

Good morning everyone. Like other posters here, I had the same problem using my DSL over LAN. I could connect to the internet but could not access some sites (i.e. Microsoft, Amazon, search pages, etc). Also, I could not send attachments in my Outlook emails. Plain text emails are fine except for large size emails. Finally found what was wrong with my system. My ISP was right, It was my system taht was causing the errors. BTW, my system was: client: Win NT SP6 256 ram PIII 1.2 server: Server 2003 PIV 2.0 512 ram gateway: Win 98 PII 1.0 64 ram Wingate 4 (firewall/proxy) The culprit was Wingate 4.0, when I removed it, the gateway computer was able to connect to the internet and email. But I needed some firewall and proxy software to share my DSL connection. I downloaded the following: FreeProxy - proxy ZoneAlarm - firewall Now everything works fine. It is a bit of a hassle though to run 2 softwares instead of 1 (Wingate) so I am still looking for an alternative for Wingate (proxy & firewall in one) preferably free. Thanks.

You really know about this kind of problem. It works right away after I followed all the instructions. Now whenever I open more than one website I always end up with one. The rest always automatically close. Could you share some of your technological skill what's causing the problem? Thanks again, Bernam

ICS has issues with PPPOEA protocol increasingly been used by various DSL providers. You should keep trying with lower and lower values of MTU until your ping is successful. For me it worked at 1272. Read this article form more - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;319661 One confusing thing in this article is that it talks about changing MTU For the network connection that has an IP address of 192.168...But keep in mind that you are changing this on ICS client. And on Client, the TCPIP adapter is configured to "OBTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY". So there won't be any IP addresses visible. So basically don't be confused. Just go to your client, find your network connection ...then find the adapter ID as per the instructions in the article and change / add the MTU value. Exit the registry editor and REBOOT. I have a verizon DSL connection using westell 2200 dual connect modem. My ICS host is connected to the modem thru a USB port and my ICS host is connected to my ICS client thru the PCI ethernet card. Peer to Peer network with a perfectly working ICS. :-) HTH

I was experiencing the exact same problem. Two hours on the phone with Dell, two hours with Microsoft. No one could fix it. Then I tried your advice. I'm not much of a techie, so REGEDIT is usually a place I don't want to go, but I did it, and it works! Whoopie! Happy New Year!

Like hodgdomi mentioned above... run cmd, and try pinging to 192.168.0.1 ... and find the correct mtu value. Then download Dr TCP and put in the correct mtu value for your network card. Sorted. I've just done it on my laptop, which shares the internet with 2 other comps.
