Networking Windows98SE to Windows2000

I have a question about Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network:

I am running a desktop AMD K6/2-350 with Windows98SE. I recently purchased an IBM A21P laptop w/ Windows2000 installed. The laptop came with a NIC and I installed a PCI NIC in the desktop. Both cards tested and work. I have set-up a LAN between the two using an RJ-45 crossover cable. The laptop can access and read files from the designated share drive on the desktop. The desktop however is not able to access the laptop. All protocols (NetBEUI and TCP/IP) are installed. The desktop user name and password have been added to the laptop. Sometimes the desktop will not detect the laptop and the windows98 Network Neighbourhood will "hang". I am currently able to see the laptop and desktop in the Windows98 Network Neighbourhood, but when I try to access the Windows2000 laptop, nothing happens. I have a single share folder on the laptop, and neither it nor the files in the folder are showing up on the desktop. Any ideas? I have set-up the network as described in the referenced article. I am not that familiar with Windows2000, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks Steve

Have you checked 'File-Sharing' on BOTH machines? (Go to the properties of both C: drives?) Sounds as if you haven't enabled file-sharing on both machines thats all? If you have, then let us know, I'll try and duplicate your problem?

I have two desktops networked the same way. The only way I've been able to access the shares on 2000 from 98 is to logon to the 98 machine as "administrator" with the 2000 machine's administrator password. But I've only had 2000 for two weeks so I'm still learning it.

Baz,

No, in the properties of C:, I haven't enabled file-sharing on the whole drive. I
do have specific folders called "share" on each computer on which I have enabled
Share. In Windows Explorer, you can see the share/hand icon on these folders.

(As an aside, I was trying to avoid enabling full-drive share on the laptop since
I will also be using it to connect to a network at school.)

I am wondering if my problem has something to do with my Login and / or Password
set-up.

My desktop username is "desktop" and say the password is DT. To be consistent, the
laptop username is "laptop" with password LT. I have added the username "desktop"
and password DT to the laptop Windows2000 using control panel (Users and Passwords)
to Add a New User.

I log on to Windows2000 (on the laptop) as "laptop" with password LT and onto Windows98
(on the desktop) as "desktop" with password DT. Someone with a similar problem suggested
that I logon to the desktop using the username "laptop" and password LT. It was my
understanding that on a network, two computers cannot have the same username.

I can try enabling full-drive share on my C: (I will try that later today), but I'm
wondering if I'm even logging on correctly.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi, just to update and maybe help others in a similar situation:

The problem did indeed turn out to be related to enabling file sharing. I am used
to Windows98 where you can right click a folder, click Sharing and modify your share
properties. I did the same thing in Windows2000 and it doesn't work.

The following is required in Windows2000:
Open "My Computer"
Select the drive on which you want to enable sharing.
Right click and pick "Sharing"
A Sharing dialog box opens. At the bottom, pick New Share.
Enter a share name (no more than 12 characters)
Click the "Permissions" button to set permissions on any User Groups that you have
previously defined. The User Groups should include the one with the username and
password from the Windows98 machine.
Voila! My network is working.

Thanks all.

Hi, I think your problem is network security. You should log on both machine with the same username and password. You can not name the computers with the same name but you can log on all computers with the same username and password. Do Le
