Question about 'What to Throw Away'

I have a question about What to Throw Away:

Does anyone have a list of FONTS which are required by Windows 98 - - from which I might be able to delete unnecessary fonts? I've got too many - - but I've also been known to delete the wrong font and not be able to use Windows at all!! Thanks - for whatever advise might be available.

Just for information, see this article:Windows Fonts That Should Not Be Deleted(Q238096)

Also, here's a couple other references:

Hi Thomas, I may be corrected on this but on the information I have in front of me here you should only delete fonts you've installed yourself.

Windows programs often borrow fonts for menus etc. but definitely do not delete fonts beginning with MS or fonts with red lettering in their icons.

Hope this helps,

Hopefully, Thomas realizes that there's no 'specific' number, to determine 'what's too many' -- has to be realistic and use common sense, based on his needs and usage, among other factors.

Assuming his system is relatively current, I wouldn't imagine needing to purge any great number of fonts, unless he had some ungodly number over and above what he routinely uses, as this does impact performance. But, I can't define an ungodly number either.

If I recall (can't be sure tho), 1000 ttf seems to ring a bell, which I think is way beyond overkill. Having a couple hundred fonts is realistic, but I'd certainly question the need of having 4,5, 600 or more unless you were into graphics/word processing/design type work.
