Question about 'Windows won't save my password when I try to connect to the Internet'

I have a question about Windows won't save my password when I try to connect to the Internet:

I have noticed this problem since installing the Zone Alarm firewall. I am wondering if the firewall has disabled the password in order to stop programs automatically accessing the net, any thoughts on this?

ZoneAlarm does not create that kind of problem, however: do check in your ZoneALarm Programs Tab and go through all the programs in that list, making sure that you have an "X" in all of the "SERVER" boxes, and then make sure that those programs that you want to have access have a check mark, and those that you want to be asked about have a ? mark. When the Dial Up forgets the password, and you are not able to make it remember it, then the prooblems traces to the Registry Key responsible for letting it remember; Someone asked the same question yesterday; I had the same problem a while back, but I have lost the Instructions, so go to Microsoft Database and search for "dialup+password" and there is an article on how to correct the problema.

The Dial-up Connection box pops up repeatedly while the desktop is loading (4-5 times) and I have to keep cancelling it out in order to complete the loading. It also pops up once after shutdown is selected.

Make sure you don't have the Windows Password installed when you start up. This will conflict with some e-mail programs. To cancel the win 98 Password Screen, TYPE IN THE PASSWORD! (hopefully you can remember it). Then go to the control panel and click on password (shows a picture of a couple of keys). When the password screen comes up, type in the password ONLY AND NOTHING ELSE and click OK. This should solve your problem. Don

I had the same problem after installing McAfee VirusScan and Firewall 2004. It seems that it is trying to connect to the internet for updates, but can't since I have not allowed for automatic connections. By disabling the software while OFFLINE only, the problem seems to have stopped. Check your utility tray for programs that can do that. Right click on them, select the specific program, look for disable, click. Remember to enable them the same way when you need them to work.

My dial up connection box pops up on the desktop constantly! Need instuctions "for dummies" to disable it. I also have been unable to scan disk. Restarts 10 times. Is the connection box problem affecting that also?

Jane, Don't know about the dial-up connection pop-up but do follow this.... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;222469&Product=w98 which is microsofts note No. 222469 that describes the scandisk 10 times problem. Hope this helps Barry

The problem is not due to the Dial-up Connection box, but to a program that is trying to establish an internet connection. It might be spyware or another malicious program, so be sure your computer is clean. Most likely, though, it is a program you installed - one that uses the internet to operate and/or update automatically. As your desktop loads, watch the icons as they appear next to your clock. Which one has NOT appeared yet when the Dial-up box starts popping up? This program is the culprit. In my case, I would have to close the Dial-up box dozens of times before the desktop would finish. Then I noticed that when the pop ups began, all the icons had appeared next to the clock except one - and that was Norton Anti-Virus 2004. So I went to the program's options dialog and unchecked "enable auto-protect at start up (recommended)." No further problems after that. The Dial-up box does not pop up even once now. Of course, I now have to manually enable auto-protect (by right-clicking the Norton icon) after connecting to the internet, but this is much less of an annoyance than the pop ups.

Had similar problem till recently. My problem occured after playing around with options in my Antivirus software. To fix all you do is go to the "Tools" option in your browser. Then goto "Internet Options". Then click on the "Connections" folder and choose "Never dial a connection". This should solve your problem and not affect anything else. Good luck.

Tom, Just wanted to thank you & everyone else for the suggested solutions. I recently started experiencing the same exact problem - 'dial-up connection' popping up upon startup, and then I had to click cancel on it about 5 times to get rid of it. I then followed your solution and it worked - one of my installed programs(which uses internet service) would appear next to the clock AFTER the 'dial-up' pop-up. It was the culprit indeed. Thanks again.

Norton Anti-Virus was causing the recurrent dial-up connection box pop up problem for me. In addition, I got sick of Symantec constantly forcing me to pay for upgrades, and their customer service sucks. So I removed NAV and replaced it with AVG free edition. It is a fantastic anti-virus program that runs and updates itself in the background. Plus, it's free and they never pester me to pay for updates and upgrades.
