Question about 'What to do about error messages during Windows startup'
Monday, June 10, 2002 at 4:43 pm

I have an annoying dialogue box that comes up after my desktop appears saying "No ISDN devices were found. Please install an ISDN device and run the Configuration Wizard again". I have no trouble with my modem which is a KTX 28800 bps faxmodem and have never heard or needed this ISDN device before. I recently installed a new printer - Panasonic KX-P7100 but do not understand how this would cause the annoying problem. Can some one please tell me how to get rid of this message on startup. Thank you.

hit start, run, type in msconfig and hit enter, then hit the startup tab. find the entry for cfgwiz32.exe and uncheck it, then restart.

Only problem then was it tried to have me install the Wizard every time I started up. My computer doesn't and never has had an ISDN card. My MSCONFIG has: ScanRegistry, TaskMonitor, System Tray, LoadPowerProfile, Vet Alert, VetTray, StillImageMonitor, Panasonic KX-P7100, PopUpKiller, ScanRegistry, TaskMonitor,SystemTray, LoadPowerProfile, SAgent95ExePath, Get single-click access tothe resources you use most often by using Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar, EPSON Status Monitor 3 Environment Check, run= There are so many things. If you know what they are and can be removed, I'd love to know that too. Thanks for your help and bothering to think about my problem. Regards Sue

>odd. well, what do you see in the startup tab in msconfig? After replying earlier today, I tried the Diagnostic startup - interactively load device drivers and software. It used the Step-bystep confirmation and started all files except Config.sys and Autoexec.bat. This solved the problem except my screen was huge. I then ran this again and introduced the config.sys, autoexec.bat, system.ini and win.ini - one at a time. I still have the problem fixed. Hooray. The only problem I have to fix now is to put my sound and vet back on the taskbar. If you have a boring moment, I do have one more annoying problem on start up. I set up a user from Control Panel and since then receive an annoying box asking for my password. I never give a passwork and click OK. I have now removed the User Name but still get the box with the Cancel option. I removed the *.pwl files from the computer and it still comes up. Can I run my internet without the Microsoft Family Logon listed in the Network Components of the control panel. I do have Windows Logon in the primary network logon section. Thank you once again for all your trouble. Will now get to fixing the other problems. Regards Sue

i guess you then need to go back into msconfig and selectively recheck things under the startup tab until you have back what you want. as for the logon screen:

1) restart and hit cancel/esc at the logon screen

2) in the network applet in the control panel, make sure the primary network logon is set to windows logon

3) remove all users from the users applet in the control panel

4) in the passwords applet in the control panel, hit the user profiles tab and select the all users of this computer... radio button

5) do a file find for *.pwl and delete any files found

6) restart

7) when prompted, enter a name (no spaces) but no password and hit ok (don't cancel/esc)

8) restart again and see if you're still prompted to log in

if you're prompted to restart while completing the operations in the list, don't (well, until you hit steps 6 and 8).

Thanks, I will try this now and let you know. Unfortunately, I have done this a few times over the months and it doesn't seem to work but there is one thing I haven't tried that you suggested which is your Point 4. Wish me luck. Regards Sue

All DONE. Thank you so very much for all your time and efforts. I know how difficult it is to work out problems when you are not in front of the computer but you did it - your a champion. I am feeling fantastic now. It is so nice to have my computer starting the way I want it too. I can't believe I didn't check the Passwords in the Control Panel myself. Thank you, thank you, and if I haven't said it - THANK YOU. Hope you have a nice day. Regards to you Sue

I tried all above suggestions to no effect. I looked again at Startup programs using msconfig and found /windows/system/hypothet.exe - not something I recognized. Looking at this file with a viewer I found reference to cfgwiz32! I unchecked hypothet and rebooted - success! Hope this helps someone

Stopping ISDN message
Sunday, September 15, 2002 at 11:49 am
Posted by Nigel (1 messages posted)

On my machine cfgwiz32.exe was not listed in the msconfig startup list. I had to search all files to find one containing a reference to 'cfgwiz'. I found that servletg.exe contained such a reference and that executable was listed. I then removed the msconfig check box for this file and my annoying startup ISDN message disappeared.

Just to say many thanks to all. My file was cfgwiz31.exe. It is nice to get rid of this problem.

If none of the other suggestions work, I found another entry that causes this error. Use Run/msconfig. Then select the System.ini tab. Open the [boot] folder and look for: shell=explorer.exe drivelam.exe . Click on the checkbox for this and remove the checkmark. Now reboot to test. "drivelam.exe" was causing this error on my PC. Thanks to all for your help in tracking this down.

It's the: EPSON Status Monitor 3 Environment Check, I had the same thing. On closer inspection in msconfig the EPSON Status Monitor 3 Environment Check has cfgwiz32.exe file associated with it. If you scroll to the right in msconfig, you should see the reference to cfgwiz32.exe
