I read that this can be generated when WIndows is connected to a device that is not
'plug & play' compatible.
But I have this message too in the I/O list device mngr doesn't report any unknown
devices...? hmmm?
So how can an unknown device be recognized as such in the I/O list and not in device
mngr?

I found After loading MS Fax Svc, that it took over my modem, I had to Ctrl, Alt,
Del, and "end task" FAx Svc.
to capture my modem so I could access the internet.
(each time I turned on my computer)! THis may be the same routine but w/other devices.

i not familiar with ms fax svc, but i installed third party fax device which i can
access via program menus. however, the program also started every time i turned
on the machine or restarted. two possible sollutions: in the program it self i told
it not to load at start up. also, look in the start menu to see if you can remove
from there. another possible solution is to use a program like started to control
which programs load at start up.
