Question about 'Get Rid of the Logon Screen'

I have a question about Get Rid of the Logon Screen:

I have Windows 98. I would like to eliminate the Logon screen. I have never entered a name or password, but get the screen every time. I do not have a "change password" tab under "Passwords". I do not have a name after "Log Off" in the start menu. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. John

Hi John,

If you have a network installed, each time you log on you will be asked for a password.
To disable this:

Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon and select Properties

On the Configuration tab, select Windows Logon in the Primary Network Logon box When Windows prompts you to restart your computer, click No Click the Start button, point to Settings, then select Control Panel Double-click the Passwords icon

On the Change Passwords tab, click the Change Windows Password button, click OK, then set a blank password. To remove the "Log Off user" entry from your Start menu: Start the Registry Editor Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer Right-click an open area in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value Name it NoLogOff Double-click this entry and add the value 1 Exit RegEdit and restart Windows Good luck....spaceman

I think you can go to the Control Panel and Network. And change from client to Microsoft
Family. You will lose the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop also, but if you
are not networking who cares. It is just clutter anyway.

if you're prompted to restart while completing the operations in this list, don't (well, until you hit steps 6 and 8).

1) restart and hit cancel/esc at the logon screen

2) in the network applet in the control panel, make sure the primary network logon is set to windows logon

3) remove all users from the users applet in the control panel

4) in the passwords applet in the control panel, hit the user profiles tab and select the all users of this computer... radio button

5) do a file find for *.pwl and delete any files found

6) restart

7) when prompted, enter a name but no password and hit ok (don't cancel/esc)

8) restart again and see if you're still prompted to log in

Try this...Start>Find>Files and Folders...Search for *.PWL...Delete this file..>Reboot..>When the Win Logon box pops up...remove whatever info(Asterisks) if any and hit ok...If that doesn't work, then I refer you back to the Reg fix....Instead of changing logon method ie...Windows Logon, MS family logon.

HEY DUMMEEEEZ . . . . . . . . . to turn off password protection Open the Network Control Panel. Make sure the Windows logon is selected, not the Microsoft network logon. Restart your computer. When the logon window comes up, enter a name (it doesn't matter what name you pick), leave the password blank, and hit return. When it asks you to confirm that blank password, hit return again. After that, you should never see the logon screen again. cYa, QuAS

If a password was entered originally will this still work? I've never tried typing in a new username after changing to windows logon.

They're ALMOST right. Go to Control panel>network. In the "Primary Network" dropdown, select "windows logon" and restart your computer. SHOULD take care of it.
