Hi, I don't have an Automatic Windows Update in my Windows 98? I believe it's available
as a download from Windows Update - is that what you've done? There isn't an option
in Control Panel to turn it off by any chance like there is in Windows Me? or a removal
option in Add/Remove Programs? If not you may have to go back to Windows Update
and get it to show you your installed updates and see if there's an option to remove
it there.

Open Internet Explorer then Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab and under "Browsing"
take the checkmark out of "Automatically check for Internet Explore Updates", click
"Apply", click "OK".
Next Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information and under the "Tools"
tab click "System Configuration Utility" click the "Startup" tab and uncheck "Critical
Update" click "Apply", click "OK" and restart your computer. (NOTE: This item only
applies if you have the "Critical Update" program installed). Hope this helps.

There is another solution.
Use a personal firewall. Among other things, It warns you when any program wants
to access Internet, and permits you to decide what to do: enable or disable it forever,
or more than that, enable only in some circumstances (you can tell it, for any app,
to filter certain IP addresses and port). The firewall remembers your preferences
everytime you change them, for instance enable Internet Explorer to access Internet
only on port 80.
For example, in my case, when kernell32 (the windows core) wants to access, my firewall
stops it from doing that.
You can find personal firewalls in any software repository. I use Sygate, but there
are lots of them (Norton, ...).
I think it's a must to have a personal frewall for all of those heavy Internet users.
Best regards,

Another alternate method is Start/Run/ type in "msconfig" and click "OK"
Click on "Startup" and take the check mark out of the "CriticalUpdate" box. Apply
the changes, and restart your computer.
This will place your system in Selective Startup mode. This is also a good place
to eliminate all the garbage programs that keep starting up and eating cpu cycles/ram..the
process is the same for all.
Cheers
