I tried to run scan disk but it kept restarting and would not finish.(windows98) what can I do to make it work rite?

Try startup with startdisk and run scandisk from dos...

Close all applications except systray and explorer with Ctrl Alt Del. Disable your 
screen saver and Energy Managment. Then try again.

I find it much easier to just do it from safe mode.

Not me. I had trouble in safe mode too. It actually wasn't meant to run in safe mode.

Joe- Did anyone answer your original question with a solution that actually worked? I have the same problem and have tried all the suggestions I see here, with NO SUCCESS.

I was wondering if anyone found the solution to this problem. I am still not able to scan disk on my WIN98 or my xp. My xp keeps saying there is a process that won't allow access to scan disk. My 98 just keeps starting over, even with all of the tips used in this post.

Start the system in dos mode. At the prompt, type Scandisk, and hit enter. it will clean up any errors you have.
