Windows can find any new ports when I try to use Direct Cable Connection

When I run Direct Cable Connection I get stuck at the part where it tells me to select a port to use. A message comes up saying "Configuring Ports, Please Wait". It sits there for about 3 minutes and then it says "Could not find new port to connect to". Why would Windows not be able to find any ports? In the system menu I have 2 com ports and 1 LPT port displayed and they appear to work find. Help -Mark

Maybe some unwanted .exe is already using your com ports. Go to the DOS prompt after re-booting but before connecting to the 'net and type: netstat -a and you will get a list of items listening for signals from the 'net. You can also run AdAware 5.83, Pest Patrol & SpyBot to see if you have any spyware on your computer. Iain.
