Remove old isp stuff

I've changed isp's and when I launch EI 6, the bar above the toolbars is still showing Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by 'my old isp'. How can I get rid of the provided by 'my old isp' stuff. If I need to use the registry, please explain carefully. I'm not familiar there. Also, would un-installing IE-6 and re-installing remove it and would that also un-install my Outlook Express. I know a lot of folks use other browsers and email programs but this is what I am comfortable with for the time being.

Hi casey,
Do this: Start / Run / type in "regedit" (no quotes) / OK / click on EDIT at the
top / Find / in the box where it says, "Find What" type in: "provided by xyz internet
provider"(your's, of course) and no quotes. Be sure all of the boxes are checked
then click on Find Next. As they are found, you can remove them one at a time by
right-clicking on the entry and pressing delete. Go back to FIND Next and repeat
until you are through the registry and then exit.

Good luck.
Spaceman

No, you don't need to uninstall IE 6.

Try this first:

-Close your browser
-Hit Start, click Run, type rundll32 iedkcs32.dll,Clear and press OK
- Open your browser

Or, you can try a regedit, but backup it up first.

See this page (these tips also work for IE 6 -- ): Repair the 'Branding' Changes ISP Software Wreaks on Your PC

Thanks LarryJ. That worked perfectly. I'll be sure to keep this on file for future reference.

Thanks Spaceman. I had to try LarryJ's edit first. I was nervous about going into the registry. Although I suppose that his was the same sort of thing. Then I got brave. I used the steps you provided afterwards and did not find anything. I'll certainly keep both of your guides on file. Thanks again!

Thanks for posting Casey. And, just to give you some additional info, concerning the registry, see Windows 98 Registry Backup and Restore

Some good stuff to know.

Your fix removed my old isp for my browser, but it still shows up when I launch Outlook Express. Help again.

Just thought I'd tell you, you'll have to edit the registry for that one. I can see
if I can locate the info. and get back to you.

Maybe you should live with it for now, until you familiarize yourself with using
the registry. I believe it requires editing in two places, but don't recall for sure.

I did it awhile back......I suggest you study on it first.

First, backup your registry. Hit Start, click Run and type Scanregw {enter}

Now, go back to the link in my original reply; there's a fix for the OE title bar (it works with IE 6 too, so where it says 5.0, just pretend it says 6.0)

Hopefully, it won't be too difficult for Casey... just needs to modify or delete 'WindowTitle' string.

Well, that's still a big deal to the faint of heart. :) Have you noticed how many
ppl. cry for help after "accidentally" deleting important files...even Windows itself!
LOL

I just located this...a good alternative for novices. There are three pages of various
I.E. downloads on CNet. Here's the page with the remove branding link.

It's called I.E. Restore 6.5

I already had the link to the correct location, but couldn't find the right download.
They used to have a file simply called something or other branding...was easy to
spot.

Casey,

Here's a link to a download for a file that'll do what you want, in case you'd rather
use that.

It's called I.E. Restore 6.5

I was using AT&T Worldnet Service which branded both IE and OE. The IE Repair worked just fine. Please note that if someone is using their ISP's customized browser they will need to reinstall that software. At least I did. I'm now using BellSouth FastAccess(dsl). Not many options in my area. The repair works just as it states. Thanks everyone for all your help!

Try this on for size: I'm haing the same problem for over a year, and although i have gotten rid of th title bar thing acouple of times (although it seems to pop up each time i update), but i also had it screw with my security settings. It either shows 40-bit or 0-bit in the "about" window...along with "customizedbrowser." Earthlink was the culprit here. I emailed over and over, even talked to several tech folks there and no one could solve the problem. Any ideas?

Some things for you to consider: Download the last Windows updates if you haven't from Windows Updates or try IE repair in the add remove programs. IE Restore 6.5 fixed my branded issue http://www.weeredsquare.co.uk/products/ierestore.php . Here are some articles about encryption problems http://www.weeredsquare.co.uk/products/ierestore.php . Delete cookies, history and temp internet files. Install Spybot Search and Destroy, download the latest updates, this tool removes spyware and adware that can cause problems http://spybot.eon.net.au/. Make sure your anti virus is up to date and scan your system. These are only suggestions. Hope I could help.
