Question about 'Clean up your hard disk'

My drive has become corrupted and works away even when I'm not active. Internet performance
has slowed to a crawl as the background operation seems work away almost nonstop.
I've reloaded Windows 98 2nd Ed. unformatted with no improvement. Having a lot of
files and music I loathe to lose, I would hate to reformat. Is there any other way?
Thanks, Jim Carson

clear out internet files by opening up IE go to tools-internet options-view settings, view
files, and delete everything inside, do disk clean up and delete all unnecessary
files, delete all files in the temp folder in the windows folder, use control alt
delete to close all programs including screen saver and defrag disk.

Jim; Do what Ian said except for one thing. Don't use control alt delete to close
all programs. The better way is to restart the computer and when you see the "post"
screen (usually shows video card, memory amount or similar), hold down the LEFT CTRL
key. This will bring up a menu. Select SAFE MODE. Then defrag your drive. When done,
just restart computer normally.

before running defrag to correct any errors there may be on the drive.

... and use the DEFRAG.EXE from ME which is ten times faster than defrag.exe from
'98. You can use PowerDefrag from www.e-technik.com (after you install DEFRAG.EXE
from ME) and if you don't have a Windows password (disable if you do) you just click
on the PowerDefrag Icon and the program will defrag the disk for you at the optimum
setting. (In the same conditions as ScanDisk does after a bad shutdown) For $20
PowerDefrag will run ScanDisk like this too. Try cleaning your registry with RegCleaner
4.3 from www.jv16.org and everything WILL run a LOT smoother. Iain.

Hello i am just passing through but I thought i should tell you that you most likely
have a virus and or spyware. check to see if you have nimda(admin spelled backways)
and get a good spyware programe( spybot is a good one) to get rid of those horrible
little nasties.
To save your music buy a cd burner, if you are prepared to be careful and open your
computer you can get one quite cheaply.
Also consider getting a firewall,
All the best
