Question about 'Top reasons for random, fatal crashes in Windows XP and Windows 2000'

I have a question about Top reasons for random, fatal crashes in Windows XP and Windows 2000:

I have a Compaq 5700N windows 98SE, 192 MB Ram 533Mhz Celeron that spontaneously reboots or freezes. This is a recent occurence that seems to happen during warm weather. Suspecting overheating, I replaced the heat sink/fan, but the problem still occurs. Rotated the RAM, problem still occured. I don't think it's a Windows problem because the system also froze when running Drive Image in DOS mode and the system will freeze or reboots when just sitting there for a while with minimal applications running in the background. My only guess now is the Power supply. If anyone else has any suggestions, they would be appreciated. I had another Compaq with a 300Mhz AMD processor that would freeze up in warm weather upon boot up, but would run fine the rest of the year. Has anyone else had problems with Compaqs and warm weather?

Sounds like your power supply Joe, but be sure the power supply fan or fans are operational.

JmC, Thanks for your reply. System and cpu fans are working, Since Compaq wants $100 for a power suppy, I picked up a remanufactured "clone" (Compaq 5724) instead for $200. Since I already had the HD imaged, it was easy to clone the HD as well. So Now I have a lot of spare components between the two. It is interesting that the 5724 has a second system fan. Maybe Compaq learned from its errors?

Funny you mention that, my compaq 5004US athlon 1.1 does the same thing, my best remedy is taking the case cover off and constantly pointing a fan on it. But i still havent fixed it. Is a new power supply my only solution?

hey all, ive been having a similar problem. last month my comp would spontaneously restart....with only a *beep*, windows xp would just restart....VERY FRUSTRATING !... so to fix the problem i did i am used to doing with previous windows o/s i format and re install. this is not a big issue as i have a second harddrive that contains backup docs / files. BUT, after this re-install windows xp now jsut spontaneously freezes up !!! ..although this is progress... i guess...it was not really what i was hopeing to achieve... i have sp1a installed... and explorer sp1 ... though i believe the problem started after the all knowing windows update told me to download 2 years worth of updates ...arggg ... please any suggestions would be appreciated... my system: p4 2.4, abit ic7, 1gb mem, WD 80GB (8mb) HDD + IBM 30GB HDD, ati radeon 8500, soundblaster audigy. think i might try the early release of sp2... man this is so anoying... later, merdox
