Question about 'Windows says it's ''Dangerously Low on System Resources'''

I am running win 98se So, I boot my system, I go online with AOL and after a period of time I get a blue screen that pops up and displays the following message: WARNING! System memory is running very low. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect may not be able to function properly. Press any key to continue. Any fixes for this annoying problem? Help!

Hi Bob,
What all do you have running in the background?? And, what do you have in msconfig
/ Startup?

Hey BoB, I borrowed this from Iain (with permission) This is a pretty concise list. But start with what is it you have running from start-up? START >RUN type MSCONFIG go to startup tab and see whats up. Something is eating up your resources. Perhaps your Symatec config.? Perhaps your aol config? http://housecall.antivirus.com/ And another from Symantec: www.symantec.com/avcenter Try running AdAware 5.84+ from: www.lavasoft.nu , Pest Patrol from: www.safersite.com , SpyBot Search and Destroy from: http://beam.to/spybotsd , Click on English flag. Swat-It from: www.lockdowncorp.com/bots/downloadswatit.html and RegCleaner 4.3 (NOT the Beta 1.1) from: www.jv16.org Run an on-line security check from: www.symantec.com/avcenter , Configure your connection to protect your bios, etc. AND use DEFRAG.EXE from ME to replace your defrag.exe, this is a must for all using 9x! Adding PowerDefrag from: www.e-technik.com if you are really having problems defragmenting, etc. Run Beta10 on ME (maybe now also for 9x) from www.beta10.com For RAM memory assistance use: RAMpage 1.6 from: www.jfitz.com/software/RAMpage/index.html ALL FOR FREE! I'm getting the same error. The only difference is:
1) the blue screen appears after my windows98 login screen pops up and
2) ONLY when I have 640MB of memory installed

I don't think my problem has to do with what I have loaded.
I previously had (1) 256MB & (1) 128MB PC133 dimm installed in my computer. No problems...
Once I installed another 256 (PNY tech) I started getting this blue screen upon startup.
I also get a message from my Creative MIDI driver saying it cannot load.
I took the dimm chip out... it worked fine... I put it back in ... got the same errors.
I'm assuming it's the memory. If it isn't, I'll probably just stick to 384MB of RAM.

I read somewhere on this forum that Windows has problems if you install over 512mb of ram.

512 MB works fine (re: Question about 'Windows says it's 'Dangerously Low on ...'')

Thanks!!!
Took the 128MB chip out and it works fine with 2 - 256MB chips. It's not 640 but
it's better that 384. Thank you again for your wonderful recall skills!

ooh, I think I did a bad thing with RegCleaner

I was having the same problem with the low memory message and found my way to this forum. I downloaded RegCleaner and began to "clean." I thought I stayed in bounds but now my shortcuts don't work. I get this message: "Access to the specified, device, path or file is denied." When I right-click the icon I don't get the usual "open" option. Did I do this to myself with RegCleaner. The only other thing I did was to run SpyBot, click every box it revealed and had it "fix" all checked. (But, I've had SpyBot for a while and have not had any problems with it.) Which is why I suspect my registry antics. (I removed all the unknown entries under one of the tabs) Was that wrong? Thanks in advance, Rob

Resources are not RAM

Understand that low resources are not a memory issue and are not typically corrected by adding more RAM. Resources are (3) stacks (work areas) used to keep track of the programs being run. If resources get low, first look to reduce the number of programs activated. Also, go the link below which gives some advice when you want to use more than 512mb RAM http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q253912

Windows 95/98 does not handle more than 384 MB of RAM properly, Windows ME does not handle more than 768 MB. You can install more, but the memory manager will not function properly. If you want to use more memory, use Windows XP, it can handle up to 64 GB of RAM.

Go and read the reference in your next post. It states that the problem for Win98 is above 512MB, contrary to what you just stated. It further gives a fix by setting a value in system.ini.

Yah, well I do not have the sticks anymore so it's pretty moot for me.

You may have done the wrong thing with SpyBot. If you click every box, then SpyBot will remove cookies (probably a good idea) and a host of other things. In my view for SpyBot, remove the "Recommended" items only - SpyBot shows a lot of ideas (items without a box ticked). Be sure of what you are doing when you tick one of those boxes.

I don't have SpyBot, but I have a similar problem. Most of my shortcuts no longer work, and their icons have been replaced with "flying windows" icons. I also cannot create shortcuts. This happened after I downloaded MP3 files, which I've since deleted, along with the program I used to download them. Any ideas ? Don

I'm afraid that your particular problem is probably virus related. I'm willing to bet that one of your download MP3s contained a virus/trojan. If you do not have anti-virus software installed, you should install one...particularly if you are using peer2peer networks. However, in the meantime, you can go here and use the free online Virus Scanner at TrendMicro: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ And if you haven't downloaded and installed it...I strongly recommend that you get "Spybot-Search & Destroy". It's freeware and an excellent program to detecting/removing "autodialers" and spyware from your system. And it is built-in updater, so that keeping it updated it easy.
