Question about 'Contents of the MSDOS.SYS File'

I looked at the msdos.sys file and it is not a text file. It has the icon I usualy
see with DLL files. I recently had a major windows problem and had to format my
hard drive and reinstall windows 98SE. I remember before the reinstallation, I was
able to go into the msdos.sys file and do the tweak suggested. Why is it no longer
a TXT file?
Thanks!

hey RJ !
its just that the msdos.sys file is registered as a system file and earlier it might
have been registered to open with notepad , which gave it the text file icon.
the icon on a file is usually the icon of the program that is used to open that file.
here's what we can try
open the notepad from
start->programs->accessories->notepad
and drag the msdos.sys file into the notepad.
and you should be able to see the file as bfore
any questions or if you need further help , feel free to email singhsays@hotmail.com
Regards
SiNGH

Don't change to text file...

It shouldn't look like a text file! Leave it alone! It's a hidden system file and
has read only and hidden attributes checked. Those attributes need to be unchecked
before editing.

No let's not do that!....

You don't know what in the world you're talking about! Let's just go change a system
file to a text file?!
I think you need to find a different hobby!

You can't change it to a text file, because it already
is, in the sense that the contents are in text. So there's no reason why it can't
be opened with notepad, or any other text file handler. And SINGHsays never said
anything about changing the file. He just pointed out exactly what I have - that
it can be opened with notepad.

I know that it can be opened in Notepad. That's the only way to edit it! He was concerned
that the icon didn't LOOK like a text file. Why should it? It doesn't have a .txt
ext. You only need to uncheck the attributes to edit it in Notepad.

Wow, looks like a real burning controversy. I am pretty sure I did uncheck those
attributes (hidden/read only) - maybe the changed attributes only take effect after
you restart...? Maybe I am on crack...? Anyway, I will try reading the sys file
in notepad, but I won't change it to a txt file. Thanks!

You 'only' uncheck them to edit the file, then save the file/changes and close. Then
recheck the attributes again to hidden, etc.

All of you in this thread do have a point. Last night I checked this forum for some
help on the same issue. On my own computer (win 98SE) I was able to edit the msdos.sys
as text file. However, on my neighbor's fujitsu lap-top (has a special fujitsu version
of Windows 98SE) I was UNABLE to change the attributes (-S -H -R); not even in DOS-mode.
So I geuss everyone here is right depending on his own version of windows
