Question about 'Change the Icons of Desktop Items'

Somehow a desktop theme got loaded on my machine that changed the icons for all of the "file folders" everywhere. I would like to change it back to the default yellow folder icon.

Go to control panel / desktop themes and change back to window theme.

I tried that - Desktop Themes, even the Windows default do not change the 'file folder' icons. These are the icons used when you open "Windows Explorer" or if you have a folder on your desktop. (Normally looks like a yellow manila folder) According to most computer geeks I talk to, the only way to change the "file folder" icons is to modify the registry, which I think one of the desktop themes I downloaded did.

Open Explorer, go view->folder Options.. -> file types tab. Scroll down to "File Folder", select it and press edit. Click Change icon and browse to shell32.dll in the windows directory and the orginal icon is in that. Click ok 3 times and press F5 at exploer and all the folders should change. If they don't then do the same for "Folder".

no DONT do that... if you do you will remove the default action for folders (i.e. opening them) and generally cause urself quite a headache.

Unfortunately I did it, under Windows XP, and all my folders cannot be opened...how can I solve this problem? I can't even edit or delete the default actions now.

I was having the same problem, I read the thread and tried the Folder Options thing before I read all the thread. DO NOT TRY THAT. I did however get everything back to normal. After searching the registry, testing settings, etc. I found that the Correct Problems wizard in TuneUp Utilities 2004 was able to correct the problem. I checked both the Icons displayed incorrectly under the System catagory and the Explorer, Desktop, Taskbar under the registry catagory. Quite frankly I was supprised, but I have always liked TuneUp. I dont know if this helps, It fixed mine.

Thanks, this worked for me too. There is a repair icons options in the Tune-up utilities 2004. It totally stamped the problem out!
