I'm not very good on my computer, and recently downloaded some critical updates that windows asked me to download and install. Unfortunately, since I have done this every time I try to shut down the computer via the start button it crashes. if I do manage to go to the CTRL, ALT, DEL bit, I find that it says that Notification Wnd for RNA ad,min has stopped responding, does any body know how to fix this? Or where I may be able to find some help? Thank you.

Hi Leah,

From what I've discovered so far, 'RNADMIN' is a piece of spyware related to Real
Player. It seems to install with the Real Player Gold (Real Player V9.0) version.
This problem your experiencing initiates after MS updates, or can occur after
uninstalling Real Player. It has a trick file extension so that Ad-Ware software
won't detect it.

First click START, move to 'FIND' and then select 'FILES or FOLDERS'. In the
'Named' box, type 'RNADMIN', be sure the 'Look in:' box is set at your C: drive and
press enter. If the file is found, it will be in the C:\Windows\Application Data\Real
directory. Now close the Find files window. If the file was found then proceed.

Now click START, move to 'Settings' and click the 'Taskbar & Start Menu' selection.
Then click the 'Start Menu Programs' tab and then the 'Remove' button. Now drill
down to the 'Startup' entry and double click it. If there is an instance of 'RNADMIN'
listed, click it once to highlight it and then click the 'Remove' button. Then click
'Close' and 'OK' at the next window. If it isn't listed, click the 'Close' button
and then 'Cancel'.

Next click START\RUN, type 'MSCONFIG' in the 'Open' box and press enter. When the
'System Configuration Utility' appears, click the 'Startup' tab. Look for any instance
of 'RNADMIN' and uncheck the selection. Next click 'Apply', then 'OK' and
reboot when prompted.

Now try for a normal shutdown. If the shutdown process operates normal now, you
can do the find file option again, right click the 'RNADMIN' file and select 'Delete'
from the menu. This shouldn't effect the operation of Real Player, but if it does,
remove it with Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and reinstall it.

ps: Here's a cute story regarding this problem: RNAdmin

JmC, Thanks for your helpful and detailed info about RNADMIN. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. Would you have any other suggestions? I am having the same problem: getting the "Notification Wnd for RNAdmin" when I close down. I did your first step and found a folder - but not a file - named rnadmin. Inside that folder is a file named rnsystem.dat. I then did your second and third steps. I did not find any mention of "rnadmin" or "rnsystem.dat" in either place. So, there was nothing to remove or uncheck. (I went through this whole thing twice - carefully - to make certain that I hadn't missed it.) I then tried for a normal shutdown but I still continue to get that message. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks a lot for any help.

How about going to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and removing Real Player. It would answer some questions! JmC

Hi, I work in a computer shop as a PC Technician. Just lately I have seen this "RNAdmin" notification problem on two customers PCs (within the last fortnight - these weird problems always seem to come in pairs ;)). They had been causing various problems such as the taskbar freezing up and not responding (a CTRL-ALT-DELETE and kill off explorer.exe and it'd be fine again), printers not printing from different programs, fatal exceptions, PCs not shutting down properly (due to the RNAdmin error) and some other problems. I had run Ad-Aware over both of these customers PCs, but it had failed to detect RNAdmin as spyware (mind you that I wasn't at the very latest Ad-Aware signature anyway). However, once "Uninstalling" the "Real Player" software (I think it was called "Real One") from the Add/Remove programs list, everything was working perfectly again. Maybe it'd be OK if it was reinstalled again, but uninstalling this "Real One" seems to be the immediate solution. Anyway, just thought I'd mention my experiences with it.. Hope it helps.. Thanks.. I had the same problem with rnadmin, including slowing down my system and causing a number of links to crash my computer. I could not find the file in any of my startup menus, so having found it in Windows Explorer, I simply deleted rnsystem.dat on the principle that I could always restore it, and lo and behold it cured everything! My system is back to normal, in fact it seems to working faster than before, all the links work properly again and the system closes down perfectly. I only have the free Real Player downloaded from the internet, and that still seems to work perfectly well. I don't know why this should solve the problem, but I'm grateful I was pointed in the right direction. Sue

Real Player causing HAVOC!
Monday, December 2, 2002 at 3:08 pm
Posted by ShootRealPlayer (1 messages posted)

For no apparent reason (I even suspected a virus), my Windows 98-based system started running very slowly (over a minute to bring up Control Panel, CDs would not start automatically, etc.) and when the Office Taskbar came up at the end of the daily start-up, it AND the bottom "START"/icons taskbar were frozen, too. After nearly resorting to a complete Windows 98 restore (since our last backup was a few days old), I happened to read the posts here. Thanks to everyone that posted, since you helped solve our problem!!! Before I deleted the "RNsystem.dat" file, I happened to notice a program entitled, "TKBellExe" in the MSCONFIG list. I simply unchecked it and, voila! Everyone is back to normal (well, as far as Windows 98 can be) now. Now, to send a "howler" to the idiots at Real.com!

I had very similar. System slowed down, menus opening erratically, refusal to shut down properly. As I have recently gone broadband and had bought PC Cillin I was looking there. I had forgotten I had downloaded free real player a couple of weeks ago - you get so used to seeing it around - and you suppose that they know what they are doing. Getting desperate, even contemplating the dreaded (for me) c drive reformat etc. Did a search for rnadmin and came upon this correspondence. I deleted (well actually transferred to a floppy) rnsystem.dat from windows/ application data folder and everything was back to normal W98 i.e. not marvellous but pretty cool. I am forwarding this link to real player!!! Thanks everyone for this correspondence and Happy Christmas. Robin

I have the problem and have come here to find a solution. Your information looks good. Meanwhile, I have used Norton's Freeze Check to free up the computer. It lets me use the computer for a while and then it starts all over again. Thanks for your post.

Thanks for the info. I just noticed the RNAdmin error and nearly broke down that my computer wasn't working just "out of the blue" and was considering calling my extended warranty place but it's x-mas day and i knew no one would be there. And great! because i'm sure they would have told me to restore the who c drive which would be aweful. Espically since all your advice (combined) told me where to look. I have no idea why real one (the free version) started messing up now because I haven't done anything with it or downloaded it recently but it only just started. Well anyway I had none of the files such as "RNADMIN" "rnsystem.dat", (oh yeah, I have Windows XP) but when I looked at "MSCONFIG" I found a file under c:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB named "evntsvc" and I unchecked it, restarted my computer and everything worked great! I just hope it keeps working. I surpose I should also delete this file also. Anyway THANKS for the help and I hope this helps others who are having this truly annoying problem!

I am so glad to hear these suggestions. They sound just like my problem. I don't know why it occurred now, as I have had Realplayer installed for many months (and not used it). I have the RNAdmin problem, shutdown freezes, slow, sluggish typing, CD start problems, and Control Panel opening delays as well as task bar freeze ups. Quite a frustration to do anything on the computer. I already removed Realplayer, and I will now log off to see if it worked. If not, I will try some of the other Suggestions. Thanks so much everyone.

I too had / have the RNAdmin problem. I have recently installed a Firewall and have been surprised at the number of Outgoing requests Real Player makes. I have denied access each time but the requests continue several times a session, perhaps every ten minutes or so. I wonder if this has any bearing on the sudden appearance on my computer of the RNAdmin problem?

Thanks and congratulations go to you guys, and boo to Real. I too had the message regarding "RNAdmin" on shutting down, and a whole host of other symptoms. Like someone on this forum said, it started for no reason several months after installing RealOne. Symptoms included not recognising printer port, and not shutting down. Most importantly, it also seemed to muck up DirectX communicating with my graphics card (Radeon), and not recognising Direct3D, so I couldn't play any of my Christmas presents! I had already spent all day updating DirectX, reinstalling my graphics drivers etc to no avail (not good for my Chirstmas holidays and almost causing terrible rows with my girlfriend!). **Final solution was to delete "RNSystem.dat" and uncheck any references to any Real products using MSConfig (type "MSConfig" after pressing Start Menu/Run).** So far this has solved all of the problems. I haven't tried running RealOne since, and to be quite honest, I'm not sure that I want anything to do with them again. Happy new year.

Here's a quote from our real hero! w00t I like fixed up my computer when it was going so slow and screwing up. 'cause everytime when I shut down, there'd be this "Notification Wnd for RNAdmin" thing, saying the program is still running or whatnot... then so I went to Run, RNAdmin, and there was no such program or whatever... then just today I went to Find, RNAdmin, and turned out it was this RealPlayer thingy... meh, so I just uninstalled all of the Real programs, and mwa ha ha ha ha ha... Compy is back to fastness!! XDD Meh, I gotta go to my friend's house later to study x_X JmC

Thanks from me as well regarding this problem. It had hit one of the PCs at work and now less than a month later hits my home machine. I too went through the process of wondering if it was a virus/hard drive failure/win 98 being crap, but to find its a piece of spyware doing this is shocking. How do these companies get away with this?! I was nearly at the point of formatting the hard drive! Anyway, deleting realplayer does the trick. Wonder why it seems to be kicking into gear round the same time for a lot of us?;) Bloody spyware! Thanks for all the info, I would have been stuck without this place:)

Just to clarify...I only deleted the RNADMIN.DAT file from c:\windows\application data\Real directory. I also used msconfig to turn off rnadmin and tkbellexe. Since then my machine has worked fine. I'm writing this again as another machine at work (we have 5) now has this rnadmin problem!! So I came here to double check what to do. Big thanks to JmC who replied to Leah giving me the above advice in this forum. Nice one:)

Thank you JmC, I removed the folder named RNADMIN. Maybe I shouldn't have, but too late. My wife's computer now shutsdown without problems. And the Windows explorer is not locking up anymore. I also found MSCONFIG very useful. Thanks again, Richard

I had this problem too. My computer was almost unusable and I just deleted the Real directory from the Program Files folder (The uninstaller crashed every time I tried it). This has worked fine. I cannot believe Real caused me so much hassle though.

I have been struggling with this RNAdmin problem for months now. My computer has been freezing, hanging, crashing, lost all my sound, you name it I have had the problem. Until I read these articles I never would have thought Real One Player could cause so many problems. I remember this all started when my son was staying with us and he added all these extra programs to my computer. I found Real One thru my add/delete programs and deleted and Ole' it was fixed. I am so grateful for these discussion forums. It saved me a lot of money and a C drive reformat. Thank you very much. If you have any other advise please email me. Grateful Fancee

I have had all the above mentioned problems for 6 months or more and have been trying all sorts of things including a complete reinstall (unfortunately that included real one). This morning I got my wife to remove the real directory and the start up reference to tkbellexe in the msconfig and voila all problems solved. I am so happy I could roger everyone of you!!! Real now tops my most hated company list!! See this for more slating info.... http://grc.com/downloaders.htm

I second the above, thanks for the advice about this RNAdmin problem. I also got messages from my Firewall telling me that Realplayer wanted to connect to the internet, I refused everytime. I had all the above symptoms and noticed also that my Nortons system monitor was also showing the CPU was running at 100% all the time (usually runs between 0 and 60%). The only way I could solve the problem was to remove Real Player. Thanks all of the above..Phil.

SUPER THX TO ALL for the GREAT insights and suggestions on this one!!!!! Jes' shows ta go ya that not all freebies are worthy -- nor yet their higher- priced 'official' cousins. Minds me of a comment on MS-DOS fm long years back: that "free of extra charge, with it you get EDLIN ... and at that, it's over-priced!!!" -- Cheers all -- Irv

Finally and thank you. I notice the dates of all your messages as 2002. Well I have been searching about that long and just today ran across this web site. Thanks to a reader from Smart Computing who directed me to Annoyances. Great site. I followed directions by several of your members and have now finally gotten rid of the RNADMIN problem. I was unable to shut down my computer. And now guess what, it shuts down normally and sufficient speed has returned to my Win 98 puter. So if this continues hopefully, I soon will be signing back on with a new problem. Thanks to everybody, I feel better already. Dave
