Windows needs to locate an .inf file which contains the information describing the
hardware you are trying to install. Sometimes you have to drill down thru subdirectories
on a Cd-rom disk or in a folder in order to find the specific .inf file for the device.
The problem with the browse/search feature within the Add Hardware Wizard is that
sometimes it requires that you type the complete path to the file in the 'Open' filename
box. For instance, D:\install\modem\win98\blah.inf.

Have you tried right-clicking on the .inf file from within Explorer and select 'install'
on the context menu instead of running the hardware install wizard? Is the .inf file
located on a CD-rom or is it in a folder on your hdd? What type of device are you
installing/updating the drivers for? Some devices come with the complete install
app and all the necessary drivers on a CD and prefer to be installed using that procedure
rather than the MS' Add Hardware wizard. It all depends...

Well, even though it might be a winnt driver the nic card may not be XP-compatible.
Must be pretty old. Does XP correctly identify the manuf./model no. when you run
the add H/W wizard? Did you check the manuf's support website to see if they ever
released an updated drvr for XP? If not, they might've discontinued supporting your
nic. Nics are dirt cheap anyway. Ten bucks or less.

Sometimes the same packet processor IC is used on different manuf's Nic cards so
you can try another manuf's driver and it might work just as well. What model no.
is it?

Hi, I've been having problems trying to download pictures from my digital camera (a Nikon Coolpix 4100) onto the computer (Win 98). It is unable to locate the necessary drivers for it (code 28) and when i try to reinstall it, the wizard keeps trying to search the A drive, even when I change it to the C drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Too bad they don't have specifics for installing the driver for thumbdrives or anything. What a bummer. :\

For starters, we assume you're bright enough
to read what's in THE
BIG RED BOX.

An article called "Troubleshooting Driver Problems"
assumes you are bright enough to get the driver INSTALLED
**before** trying to troubleshoot it.
