Question about 'Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network'

I have a question about Connect
to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network:
I am trying to connect three computers -- a desktop with XP, a desktop with 98 and
a laptop with ME. I have internet capabilities on all of them using the router and
two wireless network adapters. I am now trying to share files and a printer connected
to the XP. I used the home networking wizard on the XP, and created the setup disk.
I used the desk in the ME laptop, and it set up perfectly. I have no problems with
file sharing on there. But, when I tried to use the disk in the 98, my problems
begin. I run the program off the disk, and it copies the files to the 98 and tells
me I need to restart the computer. After restarting, though, the wizard comes up
and tells me that it "Can't complete the network wizard. Cannot find network hardware."
Once again, I know the hardware is working to some extent, because I have no problem
getting on the internet. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi
Just a note to sympathise. I did a similar hook up but just XP and 98SE. XP is fine
(once I added another MAC address to the ISP). But the 98 configured using the setup
disc from the XP doesn't seem to have worked. I keep getting 'cant find server' messages
even when I use the routers address 192.168.1.1 (on the XP this gets me straight
to the router setup program).

Yeah...I get the same thing when I punch in the address. The only thing I've been
able to do successfully is telnet in to the router's address, and look at the setup
that way.

Read something today in a bookshop (Peter Norton's Guide To XP) .Something about
an address being allocated automatically (Ithink it was 192.etc) that would not actually
work. Maybe I should have paid the £20 for the book! It has made me think about the
'automatically get address' check.Perhaps I should give one and forget about the
XP setup disc.
Interesting too but the router indicator lights for the XP machine that works stay
on when the PC is off. Yet the lights for the 98SE only come on when the PC is on.
I dont know what telnet is.

Try this web page:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/specificbroblems.htm
There's a bit on the problem you describe (I had it too). It goes on to give details
on how to manually configure the 98 machine.
I now have my 2 machines networked (crossover cable, no hub), remember to allow the
IP addresses in any firewall software (30 mins took me to figure that out, doh!).
However still can't get 98 machine to share the Internet Connection on the XP machine.

Hi,
The LED (light) associated with the port to which your XP machine is connected stays
on because your XP machine has 'WoL' technology (Wake on LAN). "WoL" allows you to
remotely activate (wake up) the machine from another machine on your network. It
is thus important that the router's firewall is properly set up to prevent unauthorized
access from outside of your LAN if you have an active internet connection.....
Back to the networking problem. You need to have "file and print sharing" activated
on your Win98SE machine but be forewarned that you will need to have a firewall in
place (recommend that you use a proxy server for your internet connection) as others
on the internet may be able to view your Win98SE computer's drive when "file and
print sharing is activated", if the computer directly accesses the internet.....
I won't describe how you accomplish the above here. I recommend that you review the
microsoft.com site or other such 'trusted' sites to find out how to enable "file
and print sharing" for your Win98SE machines as well as gain knowledge regarding
the security challenges you face when your LAN is connected to the internet.
