Hello all. I had my computer with win98 for a while. I think over time it has become corrupt. The memory kept fading, while online it kept dissing me, I couldn't even check e-mail on Hotmail. (Other e-mail adds worked, such as zzn.com and yahoo) I don't have a cd-RW, so I just went to dos and reinstalled windows 98. But I ran into a problem. When it was done setting up, I was back in windows. Now I get tons of Kernel errors that never happened before I reinstalled windows. *I was better off not reinstalling windows* Can anyone help me. What do I do to stop the chaos in my computer? I tried to log into the net and it gave me a kernel error, so I cant go online anymore. So I'm using my old pentium 120 to send this message. =( Please help me. Besides format, is there any other way to restore my computer? If I delete windows, will I be able to install it again and have my files still? what caused the kernel thing?

You can't delete Windows, so you'd need to reformat and wipe out all your data.

There are things to try that might help, but it's hard to say. It won't hurt anything
to try! Btw, Kernel32.dll is the core of the operating system.

You can run the I.E. repair tool, and you may need to reinstall it, if it says it
can't be repaired....no big deal. Then you can clear out temp files, run scan disk
and defrag.....just for starters.

Repair I.E.
Go to Conrol Panel (start / settings / Ctrl. Panel)

1. Add-Remove Prog.
2. Highlight MSIE & Tools
3. Click Chg. or Remove
4. Click Add-Remove
5. Repair I. Exp.---OK---Yes
6. Will prompt to restart PC

Or:
IE Repair Tool-- Start - Run - (type) msinfo32 - OK --Tools - IE Repair Tool -- Repair
IE.

Hard disk maintenance:

Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Internet Options

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files, choose to delete
all Offline content and click Clear History button.

Go to Find - Files or folders - in the named box type: *.tmp and choose Edit - select
all - File - delete. Do the same for *.chk. Then type: temp. Empty the contents of
the C:\Windows\temp folder. Empty Recycle bin

Normal mode:
Close all tray applications and hit Alt_Ctl_Del and end task on all items except
for Explorer and Systray, disable your screensaver by setting to "None." Run scandisk,
then defrag. Reboot.

Or:
Run Scan disk and Defrag in Safe mode, if necessary. To get into safe mode press
and hold the Ctrl. key after starting your PC.

Plus, check in your startups and uncheck unnecessary items loading.

Right-click on the icons in the tray area, open each, go through the options to turn
off the "tray" or "run at startup" feature.

For the others, go to Start - Run, type: msconfig. Under startup tab....Leave Systray,
Scan Registry, Load Power Profile (if using power schemes), your virus scanner and
firewall if you have one.

These are basics, so post back and let us know how it goes. It should help something.
Plus, do you have quite a few third party programs installed?

Hi carol,
I've been trying your suggestions, even though my problem is nothing like those
of the original poster. Thought you might have some insight of some files I found
in c:\windows\temp, of which there were many.
But these stood out:C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\jkill.exe
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\tt_reco.exe
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\alchem.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\flujzifa.exe
This last one keeps showing up with regedit, and my policy is never trust dwords,
strings, etc. that are indistinguishable as human words. Not even real letters.
I deleted them, so I can't give an example. Hope it wasn't an important system file(oh,
oh ,it was in win\system)
My problem is my inability to right click context menu, or even paste, on all iexplore
pages. Toolbar o.k., systray o.k. I've been scouring the registry hoping to find
an answer. I mean I can live w/out right click, but, by now, it's become the principal.
Some other suggestions have been:
1. updated ver. mshtml.dll.
2. C:\windows\web\folder.htt.
3. some "malware" called stcloader.
4. x-setup Internet\Internet Explorer\Interface Lockdown\Appearance Options And make
sure the Enable Right-Click Menu is checked.
Nothing worked. Please be my guru and say it's something stupid I've overlooked.
I've changed internet settings so many times, well..
Thanks for your time. This is my 1st time here, and I will check back. If any more
info is needed, email me, I've kept this problem very well
documented. Again, thanks. dave owen

I hope it's not like playing a record backwards, chanting to the devil. Well, my
registry is cursed.
Thanks, dave owen
