After installing backpack (cd burner) driver/software, my comp started acting weird. I got some fatal error message in my autoexec.bat and my laptop won't start in normal mode, but only in safe mode. I since did the following: 1-removed the software and applied the fixes recommended by Micro Solutions (backpack people). My cd burner is operational in safe mode!! 2-Defragged my drive 3-Used few tricks on the internet such as running clean utilities NOTHING WORKS!! PLease help...ThanQ

Check the Laptop's Manufacture's site for Support and or FAQs link. You may find the answer there.

It sounds more like your computer is in Windows default video mode than SafeMode.
If it doesn't say Safemode in the corners of the screen, change the video settings
or reinstall the video drivers if necessary.

Jim:
I tried changing the display settings but it won't take!! How do I reinstall the
video drivers?? My win 98se cd would not allow me to reinstall drivers only? it wants
to reinstall the whole system? Can I download those drivers from the internet??

Type your response above my text/post, I almost missed it! Right click the desktop, click 'Properties' and then the 'Settings' tab.
  • Click the 'Advanced' Button
  • Click the 'Adapter' tab
  • Click the 'Change' button
  • Click 'Next' in the wizard
  • Select 'Show a list of drivers' and then click 'Next'
  • Wait for it to finish 'Building a Driver Information Database'.
  • In the next window, select 'Show all Hardware'.
  • It should list the correct Video card make and model, click 'Next' and finish the process.

You also might want to try running the msconfig command in the run window to see if it is booting into regular mode and not diag mode.

Jim: After I did all that, it seems that I lost something...I cannot use dial-up (phone line) to connect to my ISP. I checked the line and its ok. Also checked the modem using Norton...It seems I lost my sound card? Do I need the sound card to communicate ?? Norton says my modem dialing ok?? I checked all the basics...but to no avail..I can use another comp with the same phone line and i can connect ok?? Any ideas? thanx again.

Whatever happened to your poor little Laptop, seems to have made Windows forget the device drivers. However as with the video, they're still there. Right click the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop and then select 'Properties'. Now click the 'Device Manager' tab. Next in the devices listed double click Sound, video and game controllers. Now click the 'Refresh' button at the bottom of the window. Wait for it to finish, then do exactly the same thing with the Modem listing. If this doesn't work we'll need to do it as you did with the video drivers. Post back and let me know. JmC

JIm: Thanx for the quick response. I tried refreshing as u describe but to no avail !! I also tried reinstalling the drivers via the Device Manager but to no avail !! finally, I downloaded the driver for the modem from ESS Technology but had problems getting the rig to recognize its location on my hard drive?? I still cannot get the volume button to work. It seems I blew my audio card which I think is part of my ESS modem? Any ideas?? Thanx
