IBM, IBM clone and PC

The term PC (personal computer) could apply to any brand of small computer, even
the MAC.
Years ago, you either had an IBM or an IBM 100%
compatible computer (clone) and it was that fact that
distinguished it from a MAC. (And of course that they
weren't interchangable due to operating system and
mechanical differences).
How/what/where/when/why did PC evolve as
the "name" of preference for the IBM class of
computers?

Thanks, Carl, interesting bit of computer history.
However, I did not see an explanation of why it
shifted from people calling them CLONES to now
being called PCs.
