I have a question about Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network:

I am trying to connect a laptop running Windows 98 to a desktop running Windows XP using a parallel cable. I am able to set up Direct Cable Connections on the desktop, but that option is not available under the Communications menu on the laptop. I bought the laptop used so I don't have any additional software to download addtional components from. What can I do?

MSM: Direct Cable Connection requires that the same protocol be installed on both
computers.

in your case that probably means making do with whatever common protocol is already
in place.
disable any that are not identical on both computers.

for the Win98 machine; see the links below after your text.
