IEXPLORER causes invalid page fault in USER.EXE

Whenever I try to open IE, I get this error message :
IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module USER.EXE at 0012:000005f9. Registers: EAX=00000000 CS=16ef EIP=000005f9 EFLGS=00000246 EBX=005800ec SS=1ce7 ESP=0000a226 EBP=0000a232 ECX=00000000 DS=166f ESI=0000c716 FS=18bf EDX=00010014 ES=511f EDI=00000000 GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: 26 8a 44 02 89 46 fc 89 4e fe 0b c9 75 05 c7 46 Stack dump: 013b0e38 00080000 00630100 06bda24e 01000000 1ce7a256 1ce7a258 511fc716 00060000 000a095d 07e3a26e 01000000 00140014 c716780e 0187511f 018718bf

I have IE5.0 which comes with the installation of Win98SE.
Other than IE, every other program works fine. This error occurs even in safe mode.
Some of my frequent used programs include Netscape Communicator 4.97, Opera 6.04 and Norton Systemworks 2001.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I believe I found the solution to the "user.exe" error message for IE using WIN ME. I had the same problem and what I did I downloaded the JAVA(TM) Plug-in 1.4.0_0.1 and it will override the IE user.exe and so far it has worked. I downloaded this software using Netscape and before I installed it ask if you want to install it on both Netscape and IE and I answered yes.

I am trying to find this file to see if it will fix my user.exe problem. Does anyone have the download they could send me? I looked here http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.4.1_01/index.html. But not sure if this is the correct file. Thanks.

OK. I'm running Windows 98SE and have been having the same annoying problem with user.exe errors. I'm no computer geek but my serch for a solution to this problem turned up this - Go to start, run and type in msconfig. When it comes up, go to the General tab and click on selective start up. Unclick "load startup group items." Click OK. This requires a restart. So far, this has worked and I can't believe it was that simple. I've been trying to find a solution for months. I guess it doesn't really matter to me now, 'cause I have a new computer coming next week! But I hope this helps somebody.

I had been having this horrible problem for a few months. I ran into a solution
somewhere. I forget where. I tried all of the previously mentioned solutions.
None worked. There seemed to be no trigger for the invalid page faults I was getting.

Anyway, what I ended up doing was taking off the case, removing the fan and cleaning
it thoroughly. I used a small vaccuum with a tiny wand attachement. There was a
hell of a lot of lint and dust built up. This, in the end, was the real problem.
I've had this computer for 5 1/2 years. It's old. It had never been cleaned out.

Now, I can finally use my computer again.

Hi Scott; You wrote this awhile back and I hope that you are still there. I am having the "iexplore" error pop up from time to time and since the thing appears not to be necessary for my PC, can I just delete the stupid thing to the recycle bin and delete it again from there or will that screw up everything? Thanks Tony

Lisa; Hey, did you ever resolve the iexplore thing. I am having the same problem and dont know if I should just delete the iexplore file and get rid of it altogether or if that would really mess things up. I seem to be really good at deleting the wrong thing. Let me know if you fixed whatever it was and if it worked ok. Thanks Tony
