Hi gurus !, I accidentaly told windows that I wanted to use notepad as my default
program for html editing in the programs section of internet connection in the cont
pannel. Now I can't change that option...this is such a stupid problem and I'm ...ahem...very
annoyed at myself for not being able to work it out.
Can you help ?.

Open the editor you want to use and set it's options as the default. Most editors
have the selection. If not, it can be done with a Registry tweak.

Also, if it's listed in TOOLS / INTERNET OPTIONS / PROGRAMS you can set the
default 'HTML editor' from there.

You see therein lies the problem, in internet options programs I CAN'T change the
default html editor. Notepad appears in the box there and notepad appears on the
dropdown without empty space to type in an alternitave, also when notepad is highlighted
I can't delete it. As for picking another editor as default from options directly
from the prog I can't do that because the only other editon I've got is wordpad.
I guess I'll have to try regedit, but I'm not entirely sure what I have to do
there..........What do I have to do there ?.

I think that's what he used. Trouble is how to change that entry. I inadvertantly
nominated an email prgram in that screen and could not change it there.

The problem is you don't have another program capable of HTML editing installed.
I don't think you would be happy with Word Pad. Run a GOOGLE search for 'FREE HTML
EDITORS'. One of what I use is 'HandyHTML Editor', I think it's a free program, but
there are plenty to be found.

cool I'll try that, but it seems strange that there isnt an option to have no default
editor without having to reinstall windows casue up untill now the space has just
been blank. Does'nt really matter though.
Thanks.

Aparently having another editer dose'nt make any differance. I've downloaded one
and I'm still not given the option of choosing anything other than notepad in internet
options and theres no option for setting the new editer as default from itself either.
Whatdoesagugdo.....?. See I don't want to use an editer at all I just want to write
stuff in notepad and save it as document type text with the file extention >.html
and with notepad as my default editer windows automatically assumes that with that
extention it's a html document. Whatdoesaguydo ?.

I wish you would make up your mind, I'm confused as usual.
Read here, it's the only other option I can think of.

Sorry JmC if I added confusion to the merry-go-round. My experience was that IE
found the available options for HTML Editor, Email, etc as it was being installed
(well upgraded to IE6). After the install, I added another Email program but could
not change it in the Tools, IInternetOptions, General tab - I could not add a new
email program. So I uninstalled IE6 then reinstalled so it recognised the extra
email program. A bit ham fisted after seeing your reference to a registry edit.
Thanks for the tip.

Right, I want to use notepad as the editer for writing html but I don't want it set
as the default html editor because then windows saves files with an html extention
as html DOCUMENTS which I DON'T want. I want to save them as document type text
but with a dot html file extention....got it. I think I might invest in a book on
the windows regestry :)
