Question about 'Windows says it's ''Dangerously Low on System Resources'''

I have a question about windows 98 error message also, "Dangerously low on Resources" How can I fix the problem at home. It is even threatening to not control my Norton Anti Virus. I cannot open most applications, it freezes and shuts itself down. Should I delete some programes to give more room for the memory. I cannot afford anything else only to delve into my computer and try to work on the problem.

It sounds like you have too many programs open at the same time and your system can't handle it. Try closing some programs and just open what you need. Hope this helps

Gaylene - suggest you close all programs in your start up that you don't need:

Start->Run->MSCONFIG
OK
Startup (Tab)

Then uncheck everything except SysTray.exe and the Norton programs, close MSCONFIG,
re-boot and see if you still have a problem with low resources.

I get the same message sometimes, but it's not true. If I go to My Computer, Properties, Performance, it shows over 80% free. Dangerously low? Ha!

Low resource messages are usually caused by the use of too much unnecessary clutter
in Windows. There are quite a few things that you could remove:

Any running programs that you don't need (check what's in the system tray particularly).

Any 'eye candy' on your screen, such as visual effects, things walking across the
monitor, wallpapers, complex screensavers, etc.

Sound effects.

Permanently visible shortcuts (including the quicklaunch toolbar).

Huge amounts of fonts.

Hi Joseph; Did you resolve the "low resources" problem? I too had to go to the start tab and uncheck several items but mine stayed unchecked. You may have forgotten to click the "apply" button at the bottom of the box. Usually one has to restart their PC after making a change so that it will be permanent. One thing about it, you can always go back to the start tab and check what you unchecked. Make a short list of what you unchecked so you won't forget. Be sure and do the "apply" button or your unchecks will be put back. Tony
