Question about 'Share an Internet Connection'

I have a question about Share an Internet Connection:

Hi, I've been having some problems with ICS and I'm kind of stuck, and I'd like some help. I've installed a small network (3 computers). All computers run Win 98 SE and network works fine. One computer is equipped with an internal Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL modem, and I wanted to install ICS. I got the installation instructions in this article and installed everything on host and clients. I haven't been able to get it to work (on the clients) ever since. Now there are different things I'm not sure about : the HOST is equipped with only 1 network card. I understand that in order to use ICS, the Host needs only 1. Furthermore, even though the network settings are exactly the same as specified in the article, I have (host PC) a binding NDISWAN-->Alcatel Speedtouch in the network configuration. The article mentions possible problems, but no fix, except deletion of it. Won't this impair the internet connection on the host? When I installed ICS in the first place, the wizard shows all candidates that 'connect to the internet', i.e. a dial-up adapter, network adapter 1, network adapter 2, and the realtek network card (the one used in the network). However, the Alcatel Speedtouch does not show up in the list, which, if I understand it well, is not so much of a surprise. Then I checked out the *.log file, where it read that "Alcatel Speedtouch is not a candidate,... set to WAN or ATM". I've been trying every card listed and rebooted the host every time, but still no response on the client machines. Does anyone see where the mistake is? Thanks, Johan

Johan:  some items from a networking checklist;

1. check that NETBeui and IPX are installed as protocols on both machines.

2. check that file and print sharing still enabled.

3. run the NET DIAG utilities on both machines(from dos prompt).

4. name your network and use the same workgroup name on all machines.

5. check to see that all users are logged in to Client for Microsoft Network.

6. Win98 does not always install the correct drivers for network cards. Check and
see what drivers are loaded, and if it says REALTEK then you need to verify that
the card is indeed using a REALTEK chipset (used in some SMC PCI cards). If the card
is using the realtek chip, then you need to download from the web the most recent
drivers. Don't use the ones on the floppy, and definitely do not use the drivers
on the 98 cd.

7. enable 'remote administration' on all machines , this is in the Passwords control
panel.

8. only your host computer needs a firewall; but check the host activity carefully
as some folks have found that the firewall has been the source of their network problems.

9. see the links below after your text for more tips.

Johan: for "both" read "all" machines.

Everett, Thanks a million for your help and advice. Haven't been able to put it in practice yet, but I'll give you feedback on the results. Cheers Johan
