Question about 'Setting up Dial-Up Networking'
Friday, November 1, 2002 at 5:03 am

I have been trying to find out how to run multiple Dial-Up accounts. Quite simply, I want to have 2 shortcuts on the desktop that will dial 2 different ISP's (and maybe load different home pages). I can create the shortcuts but only one ISP is the default which leads to the user dialling the default rather than the second ISP.

if u go into my computer, dial-up networking u will see both connections in the window e.g. btopenworld & freeserve. if not then create the connections u need. once this is done, if u look near the bottom of the same dialog there is an option to tell it never to dial the default connection...

Thanks. I can see what you are saying but I guess this just stops the user dialling without thinking. What I'm trying to do is to make the user go straight to the ISP that is chosen from the desktop. For instance if I have 2 icons named "Free daytime calls" and "Free Evening Calls" I want the shortcut to go directly to the appropriate ISP. Any thoughts?

I do not now use DialUp so not expert with it. Explore the use of script files that can be associated with automating DialUp (start by looking in WIndows Help). I believe you could then create two icons for dialup with reference to different script files for each icon. Try right click on existing dialup icon, and select Properties, look at the details given for program name/location and see if there is reference to a script file. You could then clone that file for the second connection. (You will have to suppress default dialup connection)

The "always dial my default connection" choice is under the connections tab in IE's tools >internet options.

I think I've cracked the problem. I found the following on the site http://users.aol.com/axcel216/newtip11.htm Create a new Dial-Up Connection shortcut: right-click on an empty spot on the Desktop -> select New -> Shortcut -> copy this text string in the Command line box: C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RNAUI.DLL,RnaDial "My DUN" Call it whatever you want, and then click Finish to save your shortcut. You need to replace "My DUN" (generic example) with your actual connectoid name, to match the one you created when you subscribed to your ISP. And if yours uses LFNs (Long File Names), i.e. more than one word, and/or more than 8 characters, type it in between quote marks as shown above. Change the paths to match yours if different. Such command lines are case insensitive.

Regret I could not be more helpful - I was stretching my memory cells as it was. Great work
