Is Hotmail crap or what!

Has anyone else noticed the piss-poor quality of service given by Hotmail over the
past few weeks? Sometimes I can log in, sometimes I can't, but it's pretty random.
At times all I seem to get is gateway timeout errors then an hour later it's working
again.

The other thing that I noticed is that I get a lot of 'cookies must be enabled' errors
(when cookies ARE enabled in those browsers) with Opera, Mozilla and Netscape Navigator,
but I NEVER get this one with Internet Explorer...strange that...

I've hd a similar problem but MSN Messenger has been even worse. Does it do any good to complain to them? When I do it, I just get a bunch of standard boilerplate. How do you get their attention and get a person to respond?

The last few weeks? You mean years don't you? I gave up on Hotmail a long time ago. And MS Messenger too.

Hotmail is not crap. Cause I used hotmail everyday. Sometimes hotmail will gave
people some problem. I have msn internet service before and MSN gave me some problems
getting on line. Internet Explorer is a good thing to use. The other web page open
are different then Internet Explorer is good to use.

You can get MS to respond if...

'Sometimes hotmail will gave people some problem.'

Your words, not mine. Isn't that the same thing as Hotmail being crap? If it's good
then it should work at least 99.9% of the time like most email clients. Failing once
every few days simply isn't good service.

Failing every few days may not be a software issue. It may be a hardware issue or a communications problem. So if we include all of those as Hotmail then Hotmail is crap. If we exclude the Hotmail software, the rest is MSN and we can say MSN is crap - I think many might agree with that. Or we can say Microsoft is crap.

Everybody here is silly. Griping about something that is free. Let's say I give you a chocolte bar. The bar doesn't have nuts. I made no implication that there were nuts in the bar, but, you are unhappy because there are no nuts. You might even throw a fit and talk about me behind my back. Possibly calling me "Crap". It was a damn free candy bar. I just don't understand. (there are no personal experiences written here...completely made up)

Comparing a candy bar to an email server is absolutely ridiculous! If they offer email service, whether it's free or not, it should be just that...a service, and a half way reliable service!

If you want to criticize, say what is wrong. What's wrong with my statement about Hotmail? Aside from me being a bit tongue in cheek. If you don't like what I write, say why. If you won't do that, you cannot object if I reply in similar manner. I will observe the behavior I outlined recently, will you?

Oh yeah, it's crap alright. I use my free account there for emergency road access - but it's turned into a Spam trap. And I do mean Spam. As in, say 150 ads per day??? (I actually suspect that Hotmail itself may have something to do with this, in the hope that freebies might be persuaded to upgrade to their paid service.) Anyhow, there's a dandy little utility program called "MailWasher" downloadable from www.mailwasher.net. It's not very pretty, but it's very customizable and it filters Hotmail Spam very effectively, all WITHOUT ACTUALLY LOGGING ON to Hotmail via IExplore (thus avoiding the agony of the lengthy sign-in screens and the clunky Hotmail interface.) If you have a couple of HotMail accounts, you can even check your mail in all of them on the same screen, delete the garbage and/or bounce the Spam right back to sender. MailWasher is developed by an Australian guy, Nick Bolton, and its free although like me you may want to register with a few bucks. I don't know this person, so this is a completely unsolicited endorsement - and the only freeware besides MirC that I think is the cat's pyjamas.

Hi Michael, yes, I've closed my Hotmail account down about 2 weeks ago - got fed up with it - I've just opened a 2nd email account with my ISP.

Carl.

This was my experience with Hotmail several years ago. I was getting so much spam that I decided to quit using hotmail.

I went into filters and set it up so that I only got mail with "hotmail" in the return address, figuring I could at least communicate with them to find out how to close my account. The very next day I had spam, all with hotmail return addresses.

Wonder who tipped the spammers off to my new filter? You can bet it wasn't me, and who else could have known about it?

The most likely problem is lack of investment - this is the main reason why there
are problems with reaching websites, as there simply isn't enough bandwidth to handle
the number of people they've allowed to sign up.

The simple cure is to add enough hardware so that the system will handle the number
of users that have registered, but then that would involve investing in something
that doesn't make big profits...

But if you gave me a candy bar, told me it was a candy bar, and bragged to everyone
that it was a GREAT candy bar, I would expect that.

I would expect to open the wrapper and find a dog turd inside...

I don't actually use Hotmail for anything serious, I just look at it as a 'throwaway'
account. I have about 3 accounts (at different levels of spamming), but they are
useful for giving the addresses to companies, etc. rather than email addresses that
are important.

Agree. If you do not put money into teh infrastructure (hardware & communications) then the system performs poorly and the software performs poorly as a result getting a bad reputation even if it is good software
