When I minimise a window, it doesn't appear on the taskbar. It's naked, so to speak. 
However, pressing ctrl-alt-del shows the program/window as still running.

I performed a virus check (had bugbear virus!) and reinstalled windows afterwards, 
but the problem still persists. Help?

Open 'Control Panel' and select 'Add/Remove Programs'. Check for the program entries 
of WinSrvReg and Friend Greetings. If found, uninstall the program 
and reboot.

I am having the same problem but I noticed that it only occurs in one of my user accounts. I did not find any of the programs JMC mentions in my uninstall list. Any more suggestions?

This actually happened to me on XP. All I did was go to this site: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_t.htm Then chose to run the "Minimized Programs Missing". It took about 20 seconds and magically repaired everything! : )

I am having this problem right now, but I checked for those programs and they don't appear in my add/remove programs list. Any more ideas on how to fix this?

Running Programs Do Not Appear on the Taskbar

Without a doubt, the cause is something running on your system. If you installed 
an software prior to the problem, either remove it or disable any component listed 
in the startup listing.

Select Start/Run, type MSCONFIG in the 'Open' box and press enter. Select
the Startup tab and locate the individual listings at this site: Task List Programs
 
You should be able to determine what can be disabled (unchecked), from the provided
information for each item.

This tip about how to display open applications/files in the task bar literally saved me! I have a huge project due and was tearing my hair out w/o show windows in application bar. THANK YOU SO MUCH TO POSTER AND DEVELOPER!!!! I am very graterfull!
