One more win98 hardware conflict... involving ndis.vxd
Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at 11:35 am Posted by Paul
(1 messages posted)
I've discovered one more way in which Win98 conflicts with newer hardware. If you
have a processor that runs faster than 2.1 GHz, and if you need to load ndis.vxd
(a network virtual device driver), Win98 will not load (except in safe mode). You
can do a step by step confirmation, and say "no" to ndis.vxd, but then your network
hardware drivers will not load. Microsoft has a "hot fix" for this problem, though,
and so far it has worked for me. Check the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - Q312108,
and good luck!

Please let us know where you got this file to correct this issue. I have the same
issue but why do we need to call or pay MS for this support?

Hi, I originally offered the patch through my email address. Since there has been
such a demand I have posted it on my web site: http://www.pyramidcs.com/download/Patches/NDIS_Win98/
Try this first, if you have problems, email me.

Hi,
I have the same problem while trying to run win98 on a P4 2.4Ghz machine. I tried
the patch several times but it did not work for me. I re-installed win98 and tried
the patch again and it still did not work. I keep on getting the "...windows protection
error ...." message.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Good day, I also have had trouble booting Win 98SE on my P4 2.4. The problem as
i can see it is a hardware conflict.
Mine comp specs are
P4 2.4
MSI Neo mobo
1gb DDR
geforce fx5600
120gb WD HDD
Huappauge wintv Premio
PCI 56k modem,
I think the conflict exists between the geforce and an ACPI system device. The problem
is windows will not let any irq changes occur in device manager, removing the card
from the device list ( use standard pci adaptor) allows a boot. Anyway not that this
post is a real solution. Just wondering if yours= problem is similar to mine and
if anyone has any proper solutions…please!

The problem I wrote about have since been resolved by re-installing Win98 again.
I searched for NDIS.VXD and found 1 instance in the Windows directory. I then copied
the patch from Brian to that directory and ran it. The patch replaced the NDIS.VXD
file in the Windows directory and placed a copy in the Windows/Cab directory. Since
then, I've had no further problems.
I don't know if it will work with Win98SE. Good Luck.

ok,
is the patch on the floppy?
if you are at the C prompt C: _ (underscore flashing) put your floppy in the drive
type in A: then enter
that should get you to the a drive (floppy)
then type dir
that will tell you what is on the floppy.
retype the name of the executible. It may work. if not go back to the C prompt
type in cd windows
the windows directory should pop up at the prompt then type win
this should force the computer to attempt to load windows
if it hangs ( which I think it will) reboot - see then if you are offered safe mode.
good luck

Brian,
thank you so much for the hints, after trying for one year I was now finally able
to install Win98 on my Medion Titanium 8008 XL (for more infos, please refer to http://www.pcwelt.de/tests/hardware-tests/pc_notebook/29981/)
For german users: the patch is also available at Windows Tweaks (http://www.windows-tweaks.info/html/schutzfehler3.html)
Thanks again, Thorsten

Brilliant!

I would like to know about the XP machine 2-3 minute logon I have that problem.
Plus I would wonder if you knew anything about Windows 98SE not recognizing any hardware
I'm trying to install. I have a Asus P4P800-E MB with a 2.8E GHz processor 2-512MB
sticks of RAM and I can't get the onboard LAN card or another PCI Ethernet card to
be reconized. I installed them several times and tried almost everything. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

They seem to have a free M$ patch available:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243199/EN-US
I had this problem very persistent on last Tuesday. Seems the patch fixed it for
now. I'm running Win98SE (Finnish) and the patch I loaded was also in Finnish. Too
early to tell if the fix is permanent or if all available patches in all lingos work
the same.
Good luck,
Sam.

Hi Ghavipour,
Thanks for keeping your website up, the fix really helped as I needed to finish building
a test system & didn't want to pay £35 (I'm not anti Microsoft but I don't understand
why this fix isn't freely available through their knowledge base, considering it's
to fix a problem with their own software.)
Anyway thanks again

Found the same error on an old win98 (first edn) machine when trying to connect to
an ethernet router through a new Realtek ethernet card. Found a solution through
a patch provided by the company, Realtek - it was called ndpatch-model no under the
downloads section (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-3.aspx?lineid=1&famid=3&series=16&Software=True).
Not obvious to find as it is under "Others ->NDIS patch Utility for OEM Manufacturer".
Microsoft site states that there is a conflict problem with ndis.vxd in earlier versions
of windows 98 so I assume a patch is probably needed in most cases.
Hope this helps.

I'm planning on building a new dual boot machine (98 & XP) with at least a 3 GHz
processor. My question is this - are you able to actually install 98 first, THEN
go into safe mode and apply the fix? Or does the actual install of 98 fail? If
it fails, how do you install 98, then apply the fix? (I can think of an alternative
way: You install it in a machine slower than 2.2 GHz, apply the fix in safe mode,
then upgrade the CPU. Boy if that's true, that sounds like a pain in the neck!)
I know I must also modify system.ini to allow my 98 partition to operate with more
than 512 MB of RAM. (As previously linked here...)
http://www.thpc.info/ram/vcache98.html
Again, is this something I can do AFTER the install, in safe mode? Or will the install
fail, thereby requiring me to use 512 MB of RAM initially, then boot up in safe mode
to modify system.ini, then upgrade the RAM?
Can I use this modified system.ini to boot up Windows 98 with an excess of 2 GB of
RAM?
Thanks for everyone's help!

Suggest reload Windows98SE
(Insert win98se CD.. START.. RUN.. x:\setup.exe [x=CD drive letter] )
Save system files? NO.. [If you say YES.. all your driver files will be moved to
another directory and win98se reload will NOT access them.]
If a problem still exists to accessing internet through 2wire router..
then the problem exists with SBC.
We had the very same problem..
I'm running WIN98SE on a Pentium 4 (I have a seat belt and "buckle up" for safety..
because.. WIN98SE on a Pentium 4 screams baby!! -- [ No Thanks Bill Gates.. I'll
stick with WIN98SE until a really better system comes out.. Windows slow XP speed..
totally sucks! ] )..
SBC found it was a wire crossed at their hub switch (where all the residential and
biz phones go to connect to their phone system)..
SUSPECT YOU SHOULD HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.
Call SBC to fix their setup!!
