I cannot delete a file-so I can't uninstall a program!

I have a question about Prevent file corruption problems:

I'm hoping that this is not a file corruption problem. I'm trying to uninstall a Real Player program listed in my Install/Uninstall List. I see a progress bar to about 37% and then I get an uninstallation error saying: "could not delete the file C:\windows\system\RA3228_8.dll. The file is being used by another application. Please close all apps that use this file and try again." I had nothing else open or running or in my tray or even in the Close Program window except explorer at the time. What to do? BTW, I ran a QuickClean of my register to see if this file would appear in the list of registry files that would be "cleaned" from my register by QuickClean but it wasn't among the many files listed. Thanks for any help.

Is/was RealPlayer in your systray from startup? In which case, it probably started that DLL. If RealPlayer is still in the systray, close it Then try the uninstall.

As mentioned, there was nothing, zero, nadda, running at the time. Only explorer was listed in the Close Program window. We could never use Real Player consistently and whenever we tried it crashed, so I want it removed. But it won't let go!

Not always the answer, but an option would be to reinstall the Real Player program
and uninstall again.

Easy...delete the real player folder then run scandisk and reg cleaner to clean up the mess. I've resorted to this several times. It works. You could also try an uninstalled program. Look for one at Tucows.com or ZD.net or freewareposse.com. I've never used one of them, never needed one.

just start computer in safe mode and delete in your winfile or explorer..in safe mode no programs can write to the disk which is why most programs cannot be deleted....worked for me

Hmmm. I have a similar problem in XP Home, but it's a load of files played using Real player which refuse to delete. Seems that Real player doesn't let go sometimes. Not a serious problem for me but a real annoyance.

I'm probably being really dumb but how do you run scan disk and reg clean up on windows xp home - i'm sure i have done it before sometime but can't seem to find them - are they under a different name in xp. like disc clean up or error checking. trying to get rid of real player - apparently it cannot find its uninstal file - that's convenient - bet it was never there in the first place (only downloaded it today) your help would be greatly appreciated real is really P****ing me off.
