Programs that are running during disk degragmentation

When running the disk defragmenter or Scan disk after a little progress I get the
following message:
Disk has been modified - starting over
This repeats itself over and over again so that neither program ever is completed.
I presume some program is running and writing to the disk at the same time these
programs are running but I can't find out how to stop this. Any ideas? thanks

With the stuff that you get from MS you have to run them in safe mode. I will send
you a list of better freeware that will do the job whilst you are running.

I had the same problem. Turned out to be the Klez virus.

You have to turn off your screen saver and your wallpaper. Then hit ctrl,alt and
delete and end task on all running programs except Explorer and Systray. then proceed
with your disk defragmentation.
