Question about 'Setting up Dial-Up Networking'

I have ben trying to repair my friends pc who has lost his connection to the internet.
He has no Connections listed in his Dial Up Networking. I can use the Wizard and
Make New Connection, but when I reach the end and click Finish, it just stays at
that screen (doesn't crash) and no Connection is actually created. I have made sure
he has all the relevant things installed ie MS Client for networks, Dial up Adapter,
Items in 'Communications' all ticked. I have re-installed Win98 2nd Edition. Still
cannot get a New Connection created. Any ideas please??
Thanks
Paul

Paul, did you do a fresh install or just over the previous installation? uninstall
dialup networking from windows add/remove programs (windows setup), reboot, go back
into add/remove programs, reinstall dialup networking. now try to make a new connection.
by the way is your modem driver installed correctly?

Thanks for your quick response. The install I did was over the top of the last one.
I re-installed the DUN as you suggested but didn't resolve. Also, I haven't checked
the modem driver. It says that the modem is working fine in the config, but will
be just as well to download it and re-install again. Thanks for your help

just because it says it's working, that doesn't mean it is. control panel, modems,
select your modem, go to diagnostics tab, see if computer can communicate with the
modem, if not, the drivers not installed properly.

or it's an incorrect driver, even though it says it's working under system devices.

When I say the modem is working ok, I meant that the device was communicating ok
via the diagnostic tab. Apologies, I'm at work at the moment so explaining the problem
by memory at the moment. Will try re-installing driver though. Cheers

Hi,
Yeah, my modem and everything checked out. Spent weeks in what the heck is
going on here land. After days and hours on phone with ISP techs found one who was
a hacker and got me on line with a string. Was able to download a modem fix from
the manufactureres sight.
There is a wealth of free info on this subject at "modemsite.com". You might
want to check it out.
