If you deleted them from the recycle bin, not much chance of recovery. There are
programs that can recover some data but at best I have had no luck whatsoever. You
may have to reinstall the programs to recover the data. What are the files??

I was deleting some software using the Uninstall Shield when a popup came up and
said: Do you want to delete all the components of this software. When I clicked yes
I saw that it was deleting things from various folders. I then clicked cancel and
everything seemed normal, but when I restarted my computer all thse error messages
came up saying that various files and programs had been removed. Even basic files
such as internet expolorer, paint, word etc. are not working. I have had to reinstall
MS office to open word docs... Will I have to re-boot my comp and reinstall everything
again?

Just because you have deleted them from the recycle bin, that doesn't mean that you
can't recover them. First try not to use hard drive much, go to dos prompt and use
microsft's undelete. here's instructions - UNDELETE
Type: External (5.0 and later)
Syntax:
UNDELETE [d:][path][filename] [/DT|/DS|/DOS]
UNDELETE [/list|/all|/purge[d:]|/status|/load|/U|/S[d:]|/Td:[-entries]]
Purpose: Restores files deleted with the DELETE command.
Discussion
Used to recover files that have been previously erased. The UNDELETE command can
only recover deleted files if no new files or changes have been made on the disk
since the deletion. Therefore, if you accidentally delete a file that you want to
keep, stop what you are doing immediately and use the UNDELETE command to retrieve
the file.
For more information on using the UNDELETE command, refer to Chapter 2, Using Common
DOS Commands.
Options
/all - Automatically recovers all of the files you specify.
/list - All available files are listed (but files are not recovered).
/DOS Restricts recovery to those files that meet the file specifications (filespec)
in the disk directory table.
/DT - Restricts recovery to those files found in the Delete Tracking File.
/DS - Restricts recovery to those files found in the SENTRY directory.
/load - Loads the Undelete memory-resident program into memory using information
defined in the UNDELETE.INI file.
/unload - Unloads the memory-resident portion of the Undelete program from memory,
turning off the capability to restore deleted files.
/purged[d] - Deletes the contents of the SENTRY directory.
/status - Displays the type of delete protection in effect for each drive.
/S[d] - Enables the Delete Sentry level of protection and loads the memory-resident
portion of the UNDELETE program.
/Tdrive[-entries] - Enables the Delete Tracker level of protection and loads the
memory-resident portion of the UNDELETE program. The optional entries parameter specifies
the maximum number of entries in the deletion-tracking file (PCTRACKR.DEL). It must
be a value in the range 1 through 999 with the default value determined by the type
of disk being tracked.
Examples
To undelete all recoverable files in the LETTERS directory, enter
undelete \letters\*.* /all
To undelete all recoverable files in the current directory using the delete-tracking
file, enter
undelete /dt

You can try what rebootbill says but I have had no luck whatsoever in undeleting
even with 3rd party software. Yes you may have to reinstall what you deleted.

rebootbill,
You do good work.....but I do not believe there is any
UNDELETE with Windows 98. And certainly not in DOS
with a FAT32 system. I do believe the last DOS
UNDELETE was in ver 6.22.
Sel,
If you have booted your computer and have used it,
you may never recover deleted files. The area they
occupy will possibly have been written to. Make a list
of the files that are missing. That way you can
compare it to what this program finds. Download this
program onto a floppy - if you can do it with another
computer, so much the better. The the program is
rather easy to use. It will suggest that you recover
the files and place them on another drive. Hopefully,
you can do that. Because as they are recovered, if
you keep them on the same drive, they may overwrite
the area where another erased file resides. It is going
to be tricky at best. Program is freeware. Even if you
are not successful this time, put the program on your
hard drive for next time. Good luck.

Another idea, you may be able to run System File
Checker and have it place new copies of the files from
your CD. START >RUN type: SFC
Don't leave us sitting on the edge of our seats, post
back with the results.
