Download and run SpyBot Search and Destroy:

SpyBot S&D

It looks for spyware, but also targets dialers, keyloggers and much more, and it's
freeware. After installing, go to the Online tab, and search for and install all
updates.

Next, go to the Settings tab > File Sets, and uncheck 'System Internals' and 'Tracks.'
You can always experiment with them later on. After signing off, run the scan, then
click 'Check All', and have SpyBot remove all it finds.

Hi. Carol, regarding your followup message and the use of SpyBot...you indicate that you should run the scan "after signing off". Can I take this to mean that the computer should be taken off line before doing the scan, or is a Windows restart also necessary? Thanks.

Yes, run it offline, just like any other maintenance type program. It's a good idea
to always reboot after installing or uninstalling a program. It's not necessary after
downloading the updates. If you mean, reboot after the scan, I don't think you need
to reboot. I'd never thought of it, but it may not be a bad idea.

Then after the install, once you're online again, before running it, you need to
start it up and check for updates (includes)and download those. Actually, it's not
to often to check for updates a couple times a week.
