First run Disk Cleanup (My Computer->right click on Drive C->Properties.
Go into Windows\Temp Subdirectory (real careful in here). Delete all files in this
subdirectory. If there are any *.tmp files currently in memory you will get an "access
denied" warning - you can leave these particular ones until next time.
Next do a Find on *.tmp and *.chk files and get rid of all - delete from the Find
window.
Next go into Add/Remove programs under Control Panel and look for any programs that
you decided to load but that you no longer need. If you do not know what the program
is then leave it.
Next explore My Documents and get rid of any files in here you no longer need.
At this stage you probably have heaps of files in the recycle bin. I suggest you
leave them here for a week or so unless you are in a desperate hurry to clean your
drive because you may need to restore some of them if you discover you deleted them
in error.
It is also worth searching for any files in excess of 5mb - Start->Find->Files or
Folders->Advanced->At Least 5000 kb. It will tell you if there are any big ones hogging
disk space, but don't delete anything that you aren't absoluutely sure about, and
if it is a program file that you want to delete, then delete it through Add/Remove
Programs.

If you go into the control panel and open add/remove programs, yu should be able
to remove almost everything.
Only remove things you know you can. Delete all that u don't use.
As for speeding up the defrag, all you can do is do it more often, that keeps it
updated and faster. Defrag speeds up you're computer by moving files
that you use often in you're system to the front of the computer. It can even cause
you're defrag to go faster the more often u use it. I myself defrag every other
day,
just as all hardcore gamers should!

Removing programs in Add/Remove Programs may not speed up the computer. Many programs
are listed in Add/Remove Programs but are run very rarely os why delete them? The
thing to do is reduce teh number of programs that startup when the computer is booted.
Go to Start, Run, enter msconfig and click OK. Then click on the Startup tab.
A list is displayed showing programs - if there is a tick in the box to the left
of the name then that program is started automatically. If the program is not necessary
to start, remove the rick. Reboot and see how performance is. Warning - do not
remove startup items for scanreg, systray, explorer if they are in teh list. Also
note that some programs may restart anyway - in which case, you may have to run the
program and remove its startup actions by going to Options or Preferencees or some
similar tool bar item

If your defrag is taking too long makes sure only windows is running, disable your
screensaver as this may keep resetting the defrag process.
Before starting defrag it's good practise to run disk cleanup (this will give you
the sytems advice on what files to remove) and maybe scandisk (first time only, then
as needed) this will make sure your disk is empty of unneeded, unwanted or unnoticed
files and make sure there are no errors on the drive.
A regular defrag will keep your machine running smoothly. The first defrag will take
a while but the following shouldn't take as long.
My advice is to do it over night, over lunch or even split the disk clean up and
defrag into seperate sessions so your not waiting for the clean up to finish before
you start the defrag.
Happy cleaning
