I have a question about Setting
up Dial-Up Networking:
hello, my problem is that i have installed a new modem after my hardrive crashed
and lost almost everything. after haggling with boss in wich modem to get i ,now
use a creative modem blaster 56k. my problem is that the two little green pc's show
up in the tray but when i go to surf web i cant get any of the webpages to come up.,
frustrated and out of ideas i loade a demo version of aol( it sets up dialing properties
well in case i was the problem). so that is my dilemna, i have all the latest upgrades
for win98 2nd.

- Can it get a valid IP address?
- Can the computer ping DNS numbers?
- Can the computer be pinged from other computers?

some half-baked advice

If Personal Firewall software is installed, completely remove it using add/remove
as well as manual removal, before iinstalling a new network adapter. I had to do
this for to iinstall my wireless network PC card. My failure to remove it initially
before attempting to install the new adapter resulted in my having to restore the
registry from backup just to be able to use my existing dial up connection again.
I had two half-baked adapters at that point. I could ping and see green lights, but
not connect with IE, Netscape or AIM programs, like you, till i restored the registry,
Removed (not just disable!) the P. Firewall entries in the registry and so forth
(the entire aplication) and then installed the adapter first and then the firewall
second. Windows sucks.

fowling up, sure enough i could download the aol upgrades(by the way i really dont
like aol but it works good for troubleshooting dial up settings,)but i wasnt able
to go too webpages even from the aol browser. i could see the pagers provided on
the aol homepage and some of the links

I had the same problem and the Winsock fix worked.

settings to get it to work!!
Once agin thanks!
