Question about 'Customize the Start Menu Button'

I have a question about Customize
the Start Menu Button:
When I had done everything in the explorer.exe file i made a backup and then tryed
to replace the original with my modiefied, but when I did so windows said(translated
from swedish) : "It is impossible to replace explorer: the file is used by windows."
I have the same problems with HID.DLL file that cause problems with my games.
I have a Packard Bell if that helps out with an answer.

You have to copy the files over to the relevant locations in real Dos mode. You cannot
replace files used by windows, inside windows.
Copy the NEW Explorer.exe and NEW Hid.dll to the root of C: and rename them to Explorer.new
and Hid.new
Now go to Start > Shutdown and select "Restart in MS-Dos", OK it.
At the C:\> prompt type...
ren C:\windows\explorer.exe explorer.old press Enter.
Now at the C:\> prompt type....
ren C:\windows\system\hid.dll hid.old press Enter.
Back at C:\>
Now type....
Copy C:\explorer.new C:\windows\ press Enter.
Back at C:\>
Now type.....
ren C:\windows\explorer.new explorer.exe press Enter.
Back at C:\>
Now type.....
Copy C:\hid.new C:\windows\system\ press Enter.
Back at C:\>
Now type.....
ren C:\windows\system\hid.new hid.dll press Enter.
Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart the PC
That should be it.
Assuming you have carried out the Explorer.exe modifications correctly, then the
PC should boot up fine.
If not, you will have to start the PC at a true Dos Command prompt and rename the
Explorer.exe back to .new and the original Explorer.old back to .exe

I can vaguely remember your post about the Hid.dll a few days ago. Didnt you mention
something about the size being different???? Mine is basically 32kb and is the original
win98 FE version.
Have you got a Win98 CD.
You could extract the original Hid.dll from that using SFC. Or if the Win98 cab files
are on the hard drive, the normal location is C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\
Insert the Win98 CD into the drive and hold down the "Shift" key, and wait till it
stops shuffling, so it doesnt auto load the CD.
Go to Start > Run and type in sfc then OK it.
In the next window, select "Extract one file......." type in the exact name of the
file. eg. Hid.dll then click the "Start" button there.
Next window, in the "Restore From" box type in ?:\ Win98\ ? being your CD drive
letter. Or if on the HD then C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\
In the "Save File In" box type in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM click the OK button and it
will copy a fresh Hid.dll to the System folder.
Close SFC and re-start the PC to update the system.
