I have a question about How do I store files on floppies that are too large to fit?:

How about this one...I want to install windows 98SE on my ancient laptop which has no CD-Rom drive...is it possible to copy the CD onto floppies and thereafter use them to install win98SE on my laptop?

If you do a search on Google for File Chopper, its a program for chopping large files into smaller ones that can be spanned over several floppies. It's free.

I doubt this will work. The Win98 install routine is designed & programmed to work
from the CD. If you did split the CD onto floppies, you would have to know exactly
which files go on which floppy AND some Win98 CD install files are too big for a
floppy. (Install from floppies can be done with Win95 however).

If you are able to link the laptop to another PC/laptop with a CD, yo could copy
the \Win98 folder from the Win98 CD onto the hard drive of your laptop and install
from there. (The file transfer can be done with a program like LapLink -DOS version).

Last, are you sure the laptop has enough memory, drive space for Win98?

How then does it work with Win95? I actually began copying the Win98 CD to floppies using winzip and it was HUGE!! I stopped it after about 10 floppies were filled up...

When Win95 was released, CD drives were not common and Microsoft provided Win95 either
on CD or on a large set of floppies - like 29 I think. Each floppy had a defined
set of files, equivalent to a CAB file (more or less). The setup script then worked,
prompting you to insert each file in order. (It was like doing DOS and Windows 3.x
which took about 10 floppies total) Even then, for Win95, Microsoft had to use a
trick to fit some of the files onto a single floppy (by using space normally not
accessible). For Win98, the floppy idea was dropped - too many floppies and files
too big for a floppy.

Using the zip file approach, I would estimate 14-18 floppies are required, depending
on the degree to which files can be compressed. So you could try again, zipping
the \Win98 folder from the CD to floppies, then unzippping them to \Win98 folder
on that laptop. Then you should be able to run setup from the \Win98 folder on the
laptop drive.

With a cheap parallel cable setup to another system with a CD rom drive, you could
copy or possibly run the setup program. You will need an OS installed before this
will work though. Have a read: DCC tips

It is......

The retail distribution of win98 on floppy disk
used something called DMF - Distribution Media Format
Developed by Microsoft specifically for this purpose..

You can achieve the same thing by using a program
called WinImage...
available from this link:

WinImage Program Link

Good Luck....
