Got more details? What is the program? At what point in program use does the problem
occur? And some details of the computer - amount of RAM, size of swap file, CPU
speed, version of Win98. And maybe contacting the vendor of the program is the first
thing to do.

In some cases this error can be related to Spyware. Run SpyBot on your system and
let it clean whatever it detects: SpyBot

I receive the same thing on my computer. Scrscan "This computer has performed and
illegal operation and will be shut down." I close everything out and can return
to my computer later and this is posted. I noticed that when this started happening
that it would also be doing some kind of disk scanning. Something that nobody is
initiating.

Remove your NIC card, and temporarily replace your video adapter with something simple;ie
VGA or just a different brand. Reboot. Do a scan for new hardware. Reboot. Do scanreg
/fix in DOS. Reboot. If all is OK, shutdown and re-install NIC card. Boot up and
get new drivers for removed Vid adapter. shutdown. Install removed adapter. Boot.
Should be OK. If any more trouble, check video adapter in SAFE MODE, you probably
have more that a few , (in fact check all hardware for dupes.)

LOL, do you work for Microsoft?!? Please, if you wish to offer sound advice, act
as if you're able to put down your thoughts on paper. Your "advice" has absolutely
no logic to it, in fact you have the user spending more time on playing with the
NIC card then with the video card. You simply could have advised the user to put
in a new video card. Bottom line is that the problems he had in no way indicated
a NIC card issue, video is the problem here.

I had this problem when trying to save any change on a excel 97 file. I had to do
a "save as excel 5.0/95", reopen, save again and when prompted to save as newer version
just selected "Yes". This got rid of my problem, but as you can see, it was related
to a specific excel file.
cheers!

this error msg only appears in 2 cases. 1- if your graphic card has not got the correct
driver (software) installed. 2-Internet explorer is not functioning properly.
in this case what you need to do is either re-install graphic card driver or repaire
IE (if installed separatly) by going to control panel clicking on add/remove prog
and double click on IE and select repair

I have the same message appear frequently on my computer. Only it is related to
printing large files. I open the large file (over 1,000KB) and can succesfully print
it once. If I attempt to print it a second time, I will get the illegal operation
message. On my old computer, I actually had to restart the entire computer to print
a second copy. I bought a Pentium III computer hoping with more power to eliminate
the problem. Wrong! It still occassionally resurfaces when I work with large files,
but at least I only have to close the program and reopen it, and I am always smart
enough to save before attempting to print! What can I do to make it STOP that message?
Who should I call? Microsoft or the HP printer company? I don't understand all
the talk about a NIC video card- I'm not a techinician, could a computer repair
person fix this?
Thanks for any input!

My Problem is : When (Double) clicking on Internet Explorer or
My Computer icon to open them , instead of opening it an error
message is showing which states :"This program has
performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor."
But I have found a way to open IE. It is now opening by
Right clicking on the IE icon and then selecting and clicking
the option "open".I have Internet Explorer version 5.0
and Windows 98 SE as OS in my PC.
Plz help to sort out this so that I can open IE by normal
way (just double clicking the icon) and operate it without
having any error message.
Note :In "System Properties" dialog box,the item "Display Adapters"
(which is Intel(R) 82810E Graphics Controller in my case)
in General tab, Device status is showing "This device is
working properly" though in Driver Tab ... Driver File Details,
source Driver files showing C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\181XDW9X.DRV
but physically there is no existence of this file in my
Hard drive at that path.

Hi JMC, I just love your advice regarding any PC (Software/Hardware) problem.
Sometimes you give some cool links to articles or software downloads which
I think extremely helpful to resolve these problems. For example,Internet Explorer
error message problem ("This program has performed an illegal operation
and will be shut down") has solved by downloading and running "Spybot"
spyware removal software suggested by you (at least till now when I am typing this
mail ! ... don't know there is a chance to come it back or not !!). Can
I ask for your e.mail id so that in future,I can contact you directly
for your valueable suggestions ? If you give it, that will be very helpful
for me ... Thanks a lot ... Sayantan Chatterjee (India,Calcutta)

Well, I hope this isn't too after the fact, but our computer displays the same message,
and then kicks us off the Internet. Actually, we're still connected, but all the
pages go to another annoying message, "Cannot find server," or something like that.
I'm sure you've all been there before. It's just mostly white with the message
on it. Anyway, it all seems to happen when we sign on to AOL instant messager.
Anyone else have this specific problem?
