While Initializing device NDIS: Windows protection error
Saturday, February 1, 2003 at 10:34 am Posted by George
(1 messages posted)
I just got a Asus P4T-E motherboard with an Intel Pentium 4 2200 Mhz CPU
I am using my old hard drive with Windows 98 on it. When it boots up
I get the message: "While Initializing device NDIS: Windows protection
error. You need to restart your computer." When I restart it just comes
back to the same error. I read somewhere that I need a later version of
the Ndis.vxd file. It should be a least Version 4.10.0.2000 and the size
should be 157,909. I can not find it on the Microsoft site.
Can anyone supply me with this file? My email address is
gsaunder@telusplanet.net

Hey guys - did a quick googling for 'ndis protection error' and found this site:
http://www.sjordan.com/ndis_fix.html
At the bottom of the page is a link to a file that applies the ndis.vxd fix. Caution
- there's no mention of where this file is from, so use at your risk. I tried it,
and so far, so good - my P4 2.4 GHz is running fine now.
Good luck!

This error is caused by the timing calibration code in the NDIS driver that occurs
when any CPU runs at 2.2GHz or faster. This problem does not occur with a CPU that
runs at 2.1GHz or slower.
This timing issue does not effect Windows* 98SE (Second Edition).

Hi,
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q312108
I had the same problem, found the Microsoft link in on of these messages and was
directed to their support.
I phoned the number and started with asking them about the charges because they state
in that link :
'NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may
be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update
will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support
questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.'
I received an answer they wouldn't charge anything. Asked my name, address, windows
version and an e-mail address. The person on the other end of the line supplied me
with a case number (in case the e-mail didn't arrive).
That was it.
I found the link to the SJORDAN site now. Downloaded the file and will scan it for
possible viruses.
I hope my problem will be resolved and that maybe this posting will solve the same
problem for others.
Thanks to everyone who cooperated by posting a reply, they were of enormous help.
Keep up the good work (we need that with the Windows products).

Thank YOU!!! The included text file names the executable as 'htx.exe', even though
it is actually something like 312108.exe. But not a prob.
What isn't mentioned here are the steps:
1. Start Windows in SAFE mode
2. Execute the patch
3. Reboot when it tells you to.
The splash screen makes it appear to be directly from Microsoft. Works fine with
the new QDI 2.2 Celeron I put in my Compaq Presario.
If the link below is closed, just search for 'ndis_fix.exe'.
