''Bootmulti'' question about 'Contents of the MSDOS.SYS File'

While studying for my Win2000 MCSE I installed a "trial" copy of 2000 Server on my drive, which enabled the Multiboot option at startup. No longer needing this setup, I removed the Win2000 software, and found that the Multiboot option is still present. Per instructions in this article, I opened "msdos.sys" with Wordpad, changed "bootmulti" back to 0 (zero), and saved. Although I've reopened the file to confirm the change, I still get a Multiboot menu at startup? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you running Win2000 or Win98? If Win2000, try the 2000 forum.

After seeing your response, I wondered if Windows2000 had installed anything additional concerning the boot sequence and began to research this possibility. I believe now that the issue is with "boot.ini" which currently looks as follows: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server" /fastdetect C:\="Microsoft Windows" I believe that the two "multi" entries under [operating systems] are the two copies (I know, two...I goofed) of 2000 Server that I installed. I'm assuming that removing these entries will resolve the issue? Or does "boot.ini" need to go altogether?

In addition to installing the boot.ini file, W2K modifies the boot sector so that it will point to its boot loader, which is NTLDR. To go back to the Win98 boot loader, boot to the command prompt with a Win98 boot floppy and enter the command fdisk /MBR. It might also be a good idea to reload the Win98 command interpreter with sys c:
