Question about 'When I choose ''Restate'' from the Start Menu, my computer shutsdown instead of restarting'

I have a question about When I choose "Shut Down" from the Start Menu, my computer restarts instead of shutting down:

My problem is just the opposite of the original article. At start/shutdown if I select restart my system shuts down. This also happens when loadng a program or doing a system change that requires restarting the computer. It just shutsdown. i tried looking at article hints and reversing to no avail. Any other suggestions?? Thanks!!

something to try...

go to Start > Run > msconfig > Advanced button , and check box "Disable fast shutdown" if there. Hit OK, OK.

Thanks for the tip John but I have already done that to no avail. Any other ideas? Thanks.

for convenience I've created my own desktop shortcuts for Shutdown and Restart, and they work quite nicely. try this...

right-click an empty area of your desktop, select New>Shortcut . Into the command line box copy&paste this exactly:

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE SHELL32.DLL,SHExitWindowsEx 2

then hit Next button and name it Restart, then Finish. Double-clicking the icon should cause your computer to reboot. Let me know how it works out. good luck.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Selecting "restart" from the Windows XP logoff, restart, shutdown menu results in the computer shutting down. This is not the problem of the computer restarting itself. Creating the restart link as described earlier using the "shutdown r" command results in the same problem. Microsoft support was not able to solve this problem.
