I am trying to link an laptop running XP to a desktop running 98SE. Both computers can 'see' their ethernet cards and show no problems. Both can 'see' themselves on the network and I am definitly using a Cat5 Xover cable. However on the laptop I am sending data but getting nothing back and the desktop cannot see the laptop. What am I missing here?

have you turned on file sharing inder network options in control panel and then selected the drive, subdirectory or files that you want to be able to share?

I have selected the desktops drives, folders and files to be shared but not under 'network options'. Is that making the difference?

go to system, device manager, network, halfway down the configuration window you will see 'File and printer sharing', put a check mark in 'I want to be able to give others access to files'. reboot

I think you meant to put "Using File Sharing Over LAN". =)

Anyway, this is a long answer. First things first: Both machines need to be on the 
same workgroup. If you're connecting them both directly, that's good, otherwise you 
need to be using a switch.

In 98, right-click on Network Neighborhood on your desktop and select Properties 
[if it's not on your desktop, use the Network Control panel]. You can then click 
the 'Identification' tab to see what workgroup the machine is part of. It's most 
likely 'Workgroup', but it could be something else. In XP, right-click on My Computer 
on your desktop and select Properties [if it's not on your desktop, use the System 
Control panel]. Go to the Network Identification tab and click the Properties button. 
Make sure that in the following window that the Workgroup option is checked and that 
it's the same name as the 98 machine.

Now, the hard part - XP can browse around through the 98 machine using My Network 
places and the workgroup, but the 98 machine needs a bit more effort. When you sign 
into the 98 machine, you MUST use a valid username and password from the XP machine 
- for example, the XP machine might have an account named "Joe Admin" with the password 
"a7q113n0", and you want to connect to it with the 98 machine, you have to sign into 
the 98 machine as Joe Admin with that password.

Depending on your XP security policies, you probably won't be able to access the 
Windows dir, or Program Files or individual Documents and Settings folders.

Check on BOTH systems that you REALLY use the right SUBNET MASK !!! I recently set up a network (desktop <-> switch <-> laptop) and ran into problems. Both computer would only see themselves. I checked the assigned IP addresses a dozen of times. Only days later I found that I mistyped the SUBNET MASK on the laptop - instead of 255.255.255.0, it was 255.255.0.0. Changed that and it worked.
