I have a question about How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?:

Every time I start my computer a box comes up that says "can not find openme.exe". I want to know how to prevent that from coming up. Any help is appreciated. Thanks James C.

W32.dss.Trojan:
Openme.exe.... It's an advertising trojan and according to the below website, it
can try to install a web dialer.

Try the instr. below, and post back, if you still have problems. "Be sure to export
the key" before you delete it, if you're not used to editing the registry. Use caution.

Follow up with an online scan at either one of these links.

Panda Active Scan

Trend Micro Housecall

Remove Openme.exe:

Symantec-W32.dss.trojan

Go to Start/run, and type Regedit.
You'll see an Windows-Explorer type interface.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\current version\Winlogon.

Click on it once, in order to highlight it, and to display its contents in the right
pane. You'll see a 'default' value Shell=Explorer.exe Openme.exe. Right click it,
and choose 'rename'. Edit it so it reads Shell=Explorer.exe exclusively, close Regedit,
and reboot.

........check these if necessary.

Running SpyBot on your system would be a good idea. SpyBot

Then check the following possibility.

Select START/RUN, type MSCONFIG in the 'Open' box and press enter. When SCU
opens, click the 'System.ini' tab. Next expand the boot entry at the top of
the list. Look at the line shell=Explorer.exe...... If the line shows as
shell=Explorer.exe openme.exe, highlight the entry and click the 'Edit' button.
Now edit the line to read shell=Explorer.exe, click 'Apply' then 'OK' and
reboot when prompted.

For every computer problem, there is a neat,
simple solution; and it is not always correct.

Hi James, You can do the foll:- go to start->run, there type msconfig.exe. A box opens up. Click on the startup tab and uncheck any application u don not want to start when windows loads. But be careful not to uncheck applications absolutely necessary for starting windows. Cheers...

Thanks for your help. I followed you instructions but in the line "shell=..." the text openme does not appear. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks again James C.

If it's not there, it's not there. Just run an online virus scan for good measure
and Spybot Search and Destroy, as JmC suggested. That should take care of things.

When you run Spybot S&D, just remove the items in RED, the spyware junk only.

Spybot S&D instructions...

After installing, go to the Online tab, and search for and install all updates.

Next, go to the Settings tab > File Sets, and uncheck 'System Internals' and 'Tracks.'
You can always experiment with them later on. Just scan for the spybots for now.
After closing your browser, run the scan, then click 'Check All', and have SpyBot
remove all it finds.

Note: SSD will sometimes not be able to remove all active components on the first
'fix'. You will then get a dialog asking you to run SSD at next start. Click yes
and reboot. SSD will then come up before the system puts these components 'in use'.
You will then be able to 'fix' everything.

This was refered to as a Trojan that has to do with a dial up program. About six months ago I had a problem with a dial up. I got a good virus software and it removed the trojan. But at start up there is something still trying to launch the dial up. The box that comes up says "can not find openme.exe" and when I hit ok the box goes away and my system. I am trying to find a way to keep that box from coming up. Any ideas? Thanks again. I appreciate your time James C

Did you run SpyBot (or new version of AdAware)? They should fcx the problem - as
JmC indicated, the openme reference MAY be shown in msconfig (and then again it may
not - such is the behavior of Trojans)
