I'm no techie, but I had this problem and was eventually able to solve it by doing
the following. First, the problem is in the video card driver, not the monitor driver.
To identify your video card, download a program called AIDA32 off the internet (type
it into Google). It's a slick program and gives the full low-down on your computer.
Run AIDA32 and identify your video card. I was then able to find the correct video
card driver off my original CD, but you could also probably find it at a site like
driverguide.com. Once you have the correct driver, right click on "My Computer"
then Properties/Device Manager/Display Adapters. Click on any drivers under the
Display Adapter and click "Remove". It'll tell you you have to reboot to remove.
Do that, and when it finds the "new" hardware and asks what driver you want to use,
use the Have Disk option and select the driver you need. That's about "all" there
is too it. Good luck, and I hope I've remembered everything.

Double click on the AIDA32 program to get it running. When it opens, click on the
"Computer" icon, then "Summary". About halfway down the list it should list your
video adapter. You could also click on "Display" and it should show your video adapter.
You then have to reinstall the correct driver for that adapter. Good luck.

The Possible Fix the missing Display Colours
Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 4:33 am Posted by Colin Darby
(1 messages posted)
I found with the computer I am working with I had only "16 colours and 2 colours"
available and the "System Properties" only showed one "Display Adaptor" " the "Standard
PCI Graphics Adaptor [VGA]".
Secondly the program pages were too large for the monitor screen [Yes just a few
= EG, "Adobe Reader 6.01 = Preferences"].
Unable to pull up the bottom of their pages so to click on "OK" /"Cancel" Keys and
they have no "Minimise" available on their/these pages and found you cannot "Drag"
them smaller from the page corners!
I have found I have overcome the above problems by using the below which may be of
some assistance to all!!
[No.1]
I would suggest you use the "Aida32" Free Program will give you a report showing
you what you have on board. The Aida32 report showed I had two Graphics = one as
"Standard PCI Graphics Adaptor" and the other one listed as "Intel Graphics" [Video]
[Certainly the Intel one could be of another Graphic Chip Manufacturer].
[No.2]
If you find you have a Intel Chip you can identify the Intel Chip by going into the
Intel home Web page and use the Intel "Chip ID" program which will identify the
required Graphics Program you require = from this File ID you do a search within
the Intel Site for the Program= When you find the correct Update Program, I suggest
you first download/print out the "Text" help file which will assist you with the
installation = then next download the Program [Yes I used another PC to download
the update and then burnt it to a CD]
[No.3]
Went and installed same from the CD into the required Computer
By using the above I now have overcome the Graphics and program Page problems!!
Looks like somehow the Intel Programming was corrupted or been deleted from the computer!!
Hope the above may be of assistance to all!!
Regards,
Colin Darby [Australia]

There are 2 things that could possibly cause this problem:
1: not enough VIDEO Ram.
2: Incorrect Monitor/Display Drivers.
Solutions:
1: Get a better video card with more video memory, or
2: Get the correct Video/Display drivers for your monitor.
if that doesnt work, reformat your system, or take it to the repair shop.

Same happened to me when I reinstalled win98 se. It's just a video card driver issue.
Fortunately I found the original driver CD. Otherwise I installed the diagnosis software,
very handy. It has changed its name to Everest Home Edition. It seems the English
version comes at a price these days. The French version is still free:
http://telechargement.zebulon.fr/111-EVEREST-Home-Edition-1.51.html
click on "télécharger Everest Home Edition" on the page. Click on "J'accepte" on
the license page and download.
Install it and run, then look under "Moniteur" and "Video PCI/AGC" and it'll tell
you the name of your video card.
Good luck

I encountered this after buying a reliable-source (local library) used computer and
installing a 98 operating system. Initially the CD audio also wasn't properly enabled,
but I found a driver on one of the three CDs available to me (incl. admin-type programs).
Is an appropriate driver to fix the 16-color problem on any of these MS disks? Also
(related?) when I run movie-type files, they're pretty messed-up looking and don't
play audio...

You COULD try using a real browser such as Firefox, Mozilla, Opera, or Sea
Monkey (or any one of dozens more), and find out What's The Deal with browsers
that actually work.

You had the misfortune to find the WORST EVER thread on this topic.
In the future, please don't post to ancient threads
--especially if they already consist of over 25 posts.
Start a new thread instead.
EXACT error messages are useful.
SOME ACTUAL DETAILS MIGHT BE USEFUL AS WELL.
What you have posted is drivel.
You need to dig out the disks that came with your computer.
If you don't have them, you need to find out who made your video card
and go to their web site.
Download the **Windows 98** device driver for *your model*.
If you have brand new hardware,
a driver for your 8-year-old operating system may not exist.
