Just grab a copy of winfile.exe from the old Windows 3.1 days. That allows you to
sort by extension.

Explorer, Tools, Folder options, view, scroll down to show file extensions.
Explorer, view, sort by, type [extension]
I still have Win 3.1 pity about the .doc file viewer that came with find-file! :(

Hi Mac: either you are missing something, or I am. The solution you propose does
not solve the problem. As explained in the original article:
"there are circumstances where it is advantageous to sort by file extension, and
not file type. While sorting by file type and extension yield similar results, they
are not identical."
That's because various file extensions might all be described as "text file" for
example, so sorting by "file type" may not give you the order that you need. Think
of it as "sorting by extension" versus "sorting by file description." Get it?

What is the point to all this? Did you intend to reply to a post, or.....? Why did
you start this thread, in other words?

I found that article. The reason to, "why you read my message with reading the rest
of the thread." That's because there is no thread to read. :)
You posted a new message and didn't have anyone to respond to. You're the only post
on 98 OS, so you started a thread. Confusing I know....

Hi Carol:
Yes, my message is part of an ongoing thread. I don't know how or why you read my
message with reading the rest of the thread. Search the www.annoyances.org web site
for "Sort by Extension" to see the original article and follow up messages.

Just to be clear.....winfile.exe comes with Windows 98.
C:\WINDOWS\winfile.exe
DOS will allow sorting in Ascending or Descending order by:
Name
Extension
Last access date
Size
Date & Time
And the greatest of all, Unsorted. What is good about
unsorted, if a program has 5 files that get thrown into
a folder, say WINDOWS, those 5 files will be sitting at
the bottom of the list, together. That is often useful if
you want to see if something got completely
uninstalled. And in many other situations.
