no sound in Win Media Player

I put this in SEARCH (here) and came up with many posts about it, but they seemed
to be more WIN 2000 and up, and no clear (or any) answers.
I have WMP9 installed, and it works fine, except there's no sound. When I play online
clips I usually see them but no sound. Everything I can find is turned up.
When I try playing CDs from the D drive, (or audio files I have saved) error boxes
come up saying there is no sound card, or another program is using it.
I've tried older versions of WMP, and the same thing.
Someone suggested I run tests for the directX and the sound test failed. But I
never learned what to do to fix it. And I have sound, everything else (sound) works,
and other player programs do. Just not with WMP.
I have Real Player, which plays audio files but not the CDs. It says it has to
have an update or plugin, and will contact their homepage to get it. Then says what
I need isn't available.
I also have used WinAmp, which works with my sound files AND CDs, but isn't an
option for clicking on websites (usually only RealAudio, WMP or one of them is).
This started because I was given a link to webcasts of news from around the world.
It said Real Audio player or WMP was required. At the time I was using WinAmp (which
seemed to work for my audio files and CDs).
Right now Real Audio plays the sound files, and the "generic" (I think it came
with WIN) CD PLAYER (which is in ENTERTAINMENT) plays the CDs.
I've tried taking out and changing and changing the settings (default) to, and
installing older models.
I have WIN 98 SE (hp Brio). I'm sure I had both WMP and Real Player in at one time.
In the 2 years I've had this computer I've reinstalled WIN 98 SE two different times.
What I'd like is a player that I can use for everything. Audio files, CDs and webcasts/
videos I might find online to click on and open.
I like the new WMP, how you can open it to full screen, and the visuals.
But, if I could get Real Player to work for everything (or anything else for
that matter) I could use that.
Also, I'd like to find out why WMP (any version of it) says there's an error with
the sound. No soundcard or another program is using it.
I've tried taking everything out BUT the WMP and it still says this. Only the
little generic WIN CD PLAYER was in. I don't want to take that out, because it's
sometimes the only program that I can play CDs with. And I might have to reinstall
WIN again to get it back.
I also have a cd burner (hp) and software that came with that (RECORD NOW) and
NERO (I downloaded but haven't figure out, so don't use). And CDex I've been using
to record cassette tapes onto the computer and then making CDs from them.
How do I find out what, if anything is clashing, or using whatever WMP is supposed
to use?
Thanks,
Carrie

reposting this with corrected spacing

Once again I forgot to check to make sure the spacing was okay. I just assume it
will be posted as I wrote it. The box that says "to preserve spacing" says not to
check it unless you really need it".
Apparently without it, the message all runs together with no paragraphs and breaks?
Why not make spacing the way it was written the DEFAULT on the board? Like other
boards seem to do?
I'm going to respace it and check the box this time and hope it comes out okay....

Just something to try Carrie. Disable Real Player from within 'MSCONFIG'. It has
several aliases such as 'RNADMIN', 'TLKBELL' or 'RNSYSTEM'. Actually uninstalling
it may solve your problem!
Real
Player Sucks
Yep
it Does

Okay, I'll try.
But I didn't have Real Player in (and hadn't) when this started (error message/no
sound in WMP)
I don't like Real Player either. But, I would like something that comes up for
watching online news, etc.
I had WinAmp which worked with my audio files and CDs, but not from websites.
Oh, someone elsewhere suggested I test the sound in the DirectX, using DXDIAG (I
never heard of this before)
What it basically said:
Sound: No driver problems
TEST: direct sound test results FAILURE at Step 3 (direct sound create) HRESULT=0x80004005
generic failure.
VIDEO The file i81xdw4xdrv is uncertified (not tested by MSN hd quality labs- and
I could maybe find one that is...)
DIRECT DRAW TEST ... successful
3D rendering.... successful
DIRECT MUSIC failure at step 6 activaor the 1direct music port (I can't read my own
notes)
HRESULT= 0x80004005 generic failure.
But, nobody ever told me what, if anything I could do to fix this.
I'll try what you said. I'm thinking one little file or something is in the way,
and WMP thinks something else is using it.
Maybe from some of the cd burning software? hp RECORD NOW, NERO, CEex?
Where is the place to test and see if anything is conflicting? I have seen this
somewhere, but can't remember where.

Had the same problem when I upgraded to WMP9. I went back to the old version and
the sound came back. I'm content to use the older version. I suggest you back out
v9 again. BTW, I also use Winamp and it works with websites. Maybe you need to
review Winamp setup. I suggest not using the most current version of Winamp though
as it has a few bugs. They have both old and new versions to download on thier website.
Last suggestion, try email Microsoft tech support. You will have to register with
them (.net registration) but they should be able to resolve whatever problem you
are having.

I have already tried that. I got an older version of it.
Still no sound.
Even though it says on the website with the "news around the world" that the latest
versions of WMP or RA are required and gives download links.
Last night someone suggested downloading DirectX8 (said there is 9 but he had the
same problem with WMP and used 8 and it worked). Apparently, according to the test
results I had DirectX 6. I never even knew I had DirectX-anything before that.
So, I downloaded DirectX8 and I had WMP9 and DX8
I thought it was the solution. It played audio files and CDs from the D drive.
I tried it on the website with the news from all over the world, and it brought
up the video and not audio. I mainly tried it on USA sites, to make sure it wasn't
because of a foreign country.
On one of them the same error message came up (that had with the CDs before the
DirectX upgrade) that WMP can't play this file because there's a problem with th
esound device, maybe being used by something else of not functioning properly.
I'm thinking maybe I should download DirectX9. It says on it once it's installed
you can't take it out. But it will probably go back to 8 if it makes something worse.
It's not really that big a deal, my audio files and CDs are playing.
I guess, mainly I'd like to have it work just to have it work.
Thanks,
~ Carrie

Carrie, I run win98 and was duped into upgrading to wmp9. There is a "small" sentence
that I read on Microsoft's troubleshooting page when I wanted to know why I could
not watch my videos in full screen mode anymore. The sentence read: Full screen
mode is an option for XP users only! I have been trying to find a way for months
to tweak the registry to enable it to play in full screen in win98 anyway (I believe
the only way it can be done is to change the values of the keys.) I tried uninstalling
wmp9 and reinstalled wmp7.1, but when I uninstalled wmp9, it took some necessary
files with it (and changed the registry) and now my old wmp won't recognize ANY file
extensions! It gives me the error message "registry error". Also, now it won't
play unless I drag and drop. I installed Nimo Codecs for Windows so at least now
there is sound, (maybe not today, though..it is so unstable) but it is so messed,
I had to download Ultraplayer as a replacement! Works fine except I have to select
each video one at a time to play in full screen, whereas my old faithful wmp7.1 played
all my vids without my having to adjust it each time! I figure it's just another
Bill Gates trick to "coerce" people into buying XP!!!! They could have at least
kissed us first!!!!! If you want me to find where I downloaded Nimo codecs, email
me and I will be glad to help more! PS...If anyone out there can help with the "twek98"
idea to run in full screen...PLEASE let me know!!! Thanks all you lovely people!!!
